Patricia Olsen Awarded 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Honor

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized almost 500 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2016 award recipients and learn why they received the 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Patricia Olsen

Today we’re introducing Patricia Olsen of Chehalis, Washington, who was nominated by the Lewis County Genealogical Society (LCGS). She was recognized for her commitment to provide quality educational programs for the society.

For the past two years, Ms. Olsen has single-handedly arranged for meeting program speakers with no assistance. Traveling to various genealogical events around Washington and Oregon so she is up-to-date on new research techniques, technologies, databases, and presenters, she evaluated speakers and subjects based on what she thought would be the most popular and useful to the LCGS’s members. After agreement by the society, she would finalize arrangements, including logistics, resulting in a diverse group of speakers and topics.

Ms. Olsen’s attention to detail and commitment to educating LCGS’s members in the field of genealogy illustrate that she richly deserved being a recipient of a 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Do you want to broadcast information about your local society, workshop, genealogical tip, or a research query? Just post to the WSGS Blog! You can reach hundreds of genealogists from around the state. Just email a Word document, text file, PDF or graphic to WSGSBlog@wasgs.org and the blog masters will do the rest.

We’re always looking to publicize local events and workshops, feature stories, updates from your society, and other genealogical information that might be of interest to our many subscribers.

We hope to hear from you soon! And don’t forget to encourage your Society members to subscribe to the Blog for the most up-to-date information from around the state.

Sue Rogers Kreikemeier Awarded 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Honor

Sue Rogers Kreikemeier

Today we’re introducing Sue Rogers Kreikemeier of Garfield, Washington, who was nominated by the Whitman County Genealogical Society (WCGS). She was recognized for her many years of dedicated service to the society.

Ms. Kreikemeier first became interested in genealogy while still small enough to perch on her Grandma Rogers’ knee, listening intently as her grandma told wonderful stories about their large extended family. While a relative newcomer to Whitman County, having arrived in 1977, Ms. Kreikemeier delights in learning about local families and their histories on the Palouse. Since joining WCGS in 2008, she has served as president (since 2011), program chair and become involved in planning programs and seminars.

Ms. Kreikemeier finds delight in connecting with anyone interested in genealogy and engaging them in the activities of WCGS. Her humor, laughter, and can-do attitude bring joy to all around her and illustrate that she richly deserved being a recipient of a 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

State Library to Change Public Access

According to a recent press release, the Washington State Library in Tumwater will change its public access policies beginning 01 Feb.

The changes include:

  • The library’s front lobby will become an “information hub” featuring two computer stations that allow 10 minutes of use, easy hold pickups and a State Library staff person who can help with quick questions and referrals. The hub’s hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
  • The library’s Reading Room on the second floor will be open by appointment only to people engaged in active collection usage and research. Public computer terminals will no longer be available for unlimited use. Appointments to use the library for a quiet place to work or to use the public Wi-Fi will be available depending on staff availability.
  • The Reading Room will be configured to include designated space for collaboration and research appointments.
  • Library subject specialists will be available by appointment to consult on research topics including federal, state and local government, Pacific Northwest history, and genealogy.

The State Library will continue to offer reference assistance weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the “Ask a Librarian” live chat, e-mail at https://www.sos.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx or by phone at 360-704-5200.

The State Library, part of the Office of Secretary of State, is located at 6880 Capitol Blvd. in Tumwater.

Rebecca Judd

Today we’re introducing Rebecca Judd from the Bainbridge Island Branch of the Kitsap Regional Library. Rebecca was nominated by the Bainbridge Island Genealogical Society (BIGS). She was recognized for her long-standing and consistent support of BIGS.

Ms. Judd is the manager of the Bainbridge Island Branch of the Kitsap Regional Library, where BIGS holds most of its meetings. Ms. Judd worked with library staff to refer genealogical research questions to BIGS throughout the year. She partnered with BIGS to host an open house for three consecutive years to celebrate Family History month, encouraging members of the public to come to the library to spend time with a BIGS mentor.

Last year, Ms. Judd suggested a partnership with BIGS for a “Book-a-Genealogist” program for Family History month where members of the public could schedule time to meet with a BIGS mentor at the library during the month. Ms. Judd and her staff managed publicity, referred calls and helped arrange meeting spaces.

Ms. Judd’s commitment to a continued partnership with BIGS to educate the public about genealogy prove she richly deserved being a recipient of a 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Diane Huckabay Named to WSGS Board

Diane Huckabay of Ellensburg has been appointed the WSGS Education and Outreach Chair by President Virginia Majewski. Diane, a past president of the Kittitas County Genealogical Society, will assist and support Regional Representatives and local societies in promoting genealogy in Washington State.

Meet the Board: Virginia Majewski

Do you know who’s running the show at the Washington State Genealogical Society? Did you know we have an Executive Committee, six standing committee chairs and three appointed non-elected officers? Who are all these people? In the coming months, we’ll introduce them to you, so you can say “hi” the next time you see them.

Virginia Forney Majewski

In today’s “Meet the Board” series, we’re introducing you to Virginia Majewski from Sequim. Virginia, more familiarly known to us as Ginny, is WSGS’s new President, having been elected last month. Her dedication to WSGS is longstanding as she has previously served as WSGS’s Secretary, Region 3 Representative and Vice President.

Virginia Ann was born in Yakima to Wesley Roy and Nancy Jane (Grabill) Forney. She is a proud 4th generation Washingtonian and descendant of a Washington State Pioneer family. Ginny’s name was handed down through her mother’s family – great grandmother, great aunts and aunts – even though Ginny’s dad maintains he picked out her name.

Ginny is a graduate of Quincy High School in Quincy, Washington (Grant County) and Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Spokane. She is married to her husband of 30 years, Moe. She is the mother of four grown children and, most importantly, grandmother of eight, ages 17-1. She retired from her career of 42 years as an Obstetrical Nurse in 2013.

Ginny has been involved in genealogy for more than 20 years. It all started with a couple of boxes of “junk” from her grandparent’s estate. She was bitten by the genealogy bug and it became one of her life’s passions. Her maternal and paternal lines go back to exiled Mennonites in Switzerland. In 2000, she took a three-week genealogical tour of Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands – following the path of her exiled ancestors.

Proud 4th generation Washingtonian

Virginia holds a Certification in Advanced Genealogical Studies in both American Records and Methodology from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies in Toronto, Canada. Currently, she is the President of Clallam County Genealogical Society. She is also a member of the Yakima Valley Genealogical Society, Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, Ohio Genealogical Society, New York Genealogical Society and Polish Genealogical Society.

When asked what she finds most interesting about genealogy, Ginny muses about a bigamist, unknown illegitimate cousins, a civil war hero and many more interesting characters!

A few more interesting tidbits about Ginny:

  • Her favorite color is turquoise.
  • Her favorite dessert is a Cream Puff Cake.
  • She urges anyone searching for their ancestors to use FamilySearch.org – an amazing resource available to everyone.
  • Besides genealogy, Ginny’s other life passions are quilting, reading, gardening and travel – oh, and don’t forget those grandchildren!
  • When asked what word describes her, Ginny laughs and asks if “genie-nut” is a word. We think it is when it pertains to Ginny!

Now you know a little more about one of the WSGS Board members. The next time you see Ginny, say hello and thank her for her service to the WSGS.

Barbara Jeanne Gorham Johnson Awarded 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Honor

Barbara Jeanne Gorham Johnson

Today we’re introducing Barbara Jeanne Gorham Johnson of Sedro Woolley, Washington, who was nominated by the Skagit Valley Genealogical Society (SVGS). She was recognized for the organizational skills she willingly exhibits and shares at the local society.

Ms. Johnson is an active member of the SVGS known for her teaching expertise, most recently in the emerging, complex field of genealogical DNA. She has shared her DNA interest at society programs and as a lecturer at other seminars. She has served as SVGS vice president and secretary, spending eight years on the board of directors. In addition, she has been an active member of the seminar planning committee for several years, including being chair of the successful 2015 event.

Ms. Johnson is a true example of what an outstanding volunteer is, and richly deserved being a recipient of a 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.
