An overwhelming feeling floods 5-year-old Lorrie in 1958, that her beloved Dad is not her Dad. Though her Mom denies her feelings, they linger for a lifetime. Parents die, and she makes peace knowing it is out of her hands. In 2016 while attending a genealogy conference, she strikes up a conversation with one attendee whose knowledge of DNA testing, creates hope in at least learning nationalities. The stranger turns out to be a pivotal part of Lorrie’s search.
Come hear how one person makes her way through DNA analysis to finding the truth about her father, with the help of a “stranger.”

Bring your memories because you will actually start filling out your pedigree chart. Along the way you will learn the “guidelines” for filling out the basic genealogical forms.  No computers needed for what you learn in this class. Everyone is welcome and you may attend this class as many times as you like.

Ancestry’s own Angie Bush, MS, Ancestry’s Senior ProGenealogist and NGS Region 1 Director, and the chair of its Genetic Genealogy committee. Her day job is as a Senior Genealogist with Ancestry ProGenealogists in Salt Lake City. Angie has been interested in her genealogy since she was very young. After college, she spent several years working in biotech while continuing to pursue her genealogy hobby. With the growing popularity and introduction of autosomal DNA testing in 2012, she decided to combine her two loves into one career. Although she spends a lot of time working on recent unknown parentage cases (adoptions, unknown fathers, donor conceived), her favorite type of research to do involves solving decades old “brick-walls” using a combination traditional records and genetic evidence. She is a popular speaker and presenter, and enjoys attending conferences where she can connect with others who share her passion for genealogy. Angie is a Utah native and lives with her husband and two descendants in Sandy, Utah.

Due to popular demand, this class is being repeated. What is DNA? What types of DNA tests are used for genealogy? What are the strengths and weakness? How do I know which test to take? If you have asked yourself these questions, then this presentation is for you. This class is designed to answer questions using a non-technical genealogy-oriented approach.

Thursday, April 13th – Two DNA Case Studies. 1:00 – 3:00 $15.00

  1. Going REALLY deep with Y-DNA Analysis: A Case Study with Dr. Laura Livingston. Now that you have your Y-DNA results and have figured out some family connections and ethnicity, how do you get to the deep understanding of the origins of your Y-DNA? Why do a BIG Y? What can you expect from the results of a BIG Y? Why should you spend the money for a BIG Y? What is the difference between Family Tree Y-DNA and Y-Full BIG Y results? What does it mean when you see family names that you have never heard of in the results? How do you research different clusters of families with different names?

Join us as we learn about Laura’s journey into the dizzying world of deep Y analysis and how she found out her family was a member of a unique cluster of families dating back thousands of years.

 

  1. Ricky Gerontis was adopted through a closed adoption. He did not have the original birth certificate, yet he was able to determine his biological parents. Join us and learn more about his story.

Surname Distribution Maps with Janet O’Conor Camarata

Though this class will focus on the Germanic area of Europe, where our family surnames appear, these maps are available for other countries as well. Surname maps are created from population lists, e.g. censuses, electoral rolls, taxation records and telephone directories. The maps “graphically display locations where surnames occurred at different periods.” The location can be a starting point for research in the birth country.

Adoption – Secrets Revealed with Dee Haviland Fournier

Adoption records are often marked closed or sealed. Yet, they may contain the secret to your identity. Do you want to find your birth parents or help someone find theirs? Family artifacts and photographs each come with a story or a memory. Learn an easy way to use photos and artifacts to write short, simple essays, profiles, narratives or descriptions. Each story can be shared with family and friends, by email or print, individually or compiled into a collection later or as a digital story.
