Do you suffer from the malady known to genealogists as MyTreeitis?  Ron Tanner came up with this term and Ben Baker provided the definition:  “Mytreeitis is an inflammation common to many genealogists. Symptoms include extreme anxiety over others modifying their extensive genealogical research, possessiveness of ancestors, unwillingness to work in collaborative family trees and disregard for others when removing erroneous persons from their family. This condition usually occurs in more mature adults and is rarely seen in those under 40.”

Tanner and Baker conclude that “learning to effectively use FamilySearch Family Tree has been shown to be an effective treatment for this affliction.”

Patricia Bayonne-Johnson, president of the Eastern Washington Genealogical Society, and her team of helpers have been working on a monumental project. Pat’s ancestors were sold as slaves in 1838 by the Jesuits in Maryland to Louisiana to help finance Georgetown University. The president of Georgetown University came to Spokane last month to meet with Pat! Here’s the link to the story:

************************************

I was privileged to be in the audience learning from Paula Stuart-Warren last month at the Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society’s conference. She taught us so much and I could fill up this entire post with her pearls. But I will limit myself to four wonderful quotes from Paula:

  1. “Not everything in a book is correct and not all books are digitized; we DO still need libraries, so GO to your library!”
  2. “Which is more important, preservation or sharing? Which deserves your best effort?” Paula was speaking here about how to organize your family history and what to do with all that information and “stuff.”
  3. If you don’t belong to a local genealogical society where you live, you’re missing out on the best help there is.”
  4. How much time do you spend RE-searching….chasing “shiny objects or looking at the same record over and over….because you are un-organized??”

Seattle Genealogical Society News

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING TOPIC

For those of you who did not attend the Annual Membership Meeting on June 4th, one of the topics was the concern for waning membership numbers.  Put very simply, if every member was able to recruit one friend as a new member, we’d soon have an influx of new blood and that would be great.

Personally, I can say word-of-mouth is how I learned of the benefits of belonging to SGS. For a decade, I had driven by the bright blue Seattle Genealogical Society canopy thinking, “I should check that out someday”. On the other hand, my inner “Negative Nelly” kept saying “Why bother? There’s probably nothing in there that pertains to you. Your roots are Connecticut and Ohio, not the Northwest”. How wrong this thought was.

Then a neighbor and I started discussing genealogy. She told me she had joined Seattle Genealogical Society and was getting a lot from the interest groups, education sessions, and seminars. Also the library’s resources certainly weren’t limited to the Northwest.  That sold me.

Bottom line, try introducing one friend or family member to the SGS Library; they’re certain to find something useful and interesting here.  Then they just may be motivated enough to become a new member.
