Due to circumstances beyond control, the meeting place for the monthly BIGS meeting has been changed. The Bainbridge Island Genealogical Society (BIGS) will meet Friday, February 17, 2017, at 10 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 7968 Finch Rd NE, Bainbridge Island, WA. Mary Kircher Roddy, a genealogist, lecturer and writer, will be speaking on “A Decree of (Temporary) Divorce – My Life Without Ancestry.com.” Free to members, a $5.00 donation is suggested for nonmembers. The German Interest Group of The Eastside Genealogical Society will meet on Friday, March 3, 2017, from 1 to 3 pm in the Relief Society Room of the LDS Church at 10675 NE 20thSt, Bellevue, WA 98004 with doors opening at 12:45 pm for networking.
Topic: “Meyers Orts” has been the classic reference source for information about German cities, defining government, court, military and religious jurisdictions. As a result, Meyers has been a valuable tool for genealogists in locating offices which might hold important documents. Originally published in fraktur German, use of the gazetteer was a true challenge to non-German speakers. We’ll explore the history of Meyers Orts and follow its development from old book volumes to today’s easily accessed English internet sites.
Speaker: Ken Passé has been doing genealogy research for more than 20 years and has been fortunate to have visited his ancestral village in Germany several times. A self-professed maritime guy/waterfront rat, he has extended his research to touch upon shipboard travel from Europe to America.

WSGS Board planning session
The WSGS Board of Directors recently held a planning retreat, coupled with their quarterly board meeting. After Past President Mikal McKinnon passed the gavel to Virginia Majewski, the board launched into an earnest discussion about short- and long-term goals and implementing ideas to increase our visibility and improve communication with local societies, individual members and genealogy/history partners.
Numerous ideas and projects were bandied around, many improving and crystallizing as members voiced their opinions. Some projects, such as the Pioneer and First Citizen Program, will benefit from increased emphasis and exposure. There was also much discussion about how to provide additional services and assistance to local societies. More ideas from societies and individuals are always welcome — just contact any board member.
The minutes of the meetings will be posted in the Members’ Only area of the WSGS website once they’re complete.
The board meetings are open to all WSGS members. The next meeting will be Friday, April 21 at the YVGS Library in Union Gap. For more information about WSGS and/or the board of directors, contact President Virginia Majewski.

Tuesday Tip Indexing Errors
I received a newsletter on errors in indexing
I know I ran into a bunch of ladies indexed as Mrs. Jane Doe in the digital archives. So a search for Jane Doe gets nothing, but Mrs. Doe will bring up Mrs. Jane Doe or Mrs. Mary Doe, etc. I asked if they could be edited but that is the way the record reads so they would not change it. Indexers are asked to index as the record shows, so even if the person indexing knows it is incorrect you must index as shown in the record.
I am including the newsletter so let me know if I should include it each time I receive it.
