International German Genealogy

Mission
The International German Genealogy Partnership’s mission is to facilitate German genealogy research globally as the internationally recognized federation of German genealogy organizations.
The 2021 International German Genealogy Conference, originally scheduled to be held in Cincinnati, Ohio, next July, is being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The board of the International German Genealogy Partnership, as well as that of the host Hamilton County Genealogical Society, shares the disappointment felt by all. The list of projected speakers and programs, along with other activities in a city known for its German heritage, promised to provide an outstanding weekend for participants.

The decision was driven by the uncertain health, economic and travel conditions likely to continue into next year.

Given that uncertainty, the financial risks of planning a major international conference were too great to continue. About 1,000 people were expected to attend.

There was discussion about turning the 2021 conference into a virtual event, but that was not deemed logistically feasible for an all-volunteer organization, especially when added to the desire to continue the previous theme of “Connections” with an in-person conference.

IGGP previously held international conferences in 2017 and 2019. It will now look to 2023, when it is hoped progress against the pandemic will provide more certainty for planning and a greater comfort level for participants. An announcement will be made at the appropriate time.

This decision was based on circumstances specific to the IGGC; partner societies are encouraged to evaluate their own plans for 2021 based on what is appropriate in their area at that time.

Questions may be sent to info@iggp.org. This message about the 2021 Conference cancellation has been posted on the IGGP website.

Please share this with your organization’s members and others who may have wished to attend.

STORIES OF OUR FEMALE ANCESTORS – MAY 2020
Each month we are featuring a story of a female ancestor of 100 or more years ago. This month’s contribution, Women’s Voting Stories , was submitted anonymously by a member of the Seattle Genealogical Society. It includes a summary of the Women’s Suffrage movement followed by a series of vignettes, including life on a Kansas farm.

If you have a story to tell of one of your female ancestors of 100 or more years ago, submit it to education@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org  Stories can be as brief as one or two paragraphs, or longer.
SGS CALENDAR OF EVENTS*** In consideration of COVID-19 social distancing recommendations, the SGS Library is closed until at least July 5, 2020 and all SGS in-person events have been canceled, postponed, or replaced with an online event.

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week Family Search Communities

TIP OF THE WEEK –
COMMUNITIES AT FAMILYSEARCH

SGS had a full house for the Spring Virtual Seminar with guest speaker Dr Fritz Juengling. One tip offered at this seminar was about a resource at FamilySearch.org  you may not be aware of – online FamilySearch Community Research Groups – where like minded people can ask or answer research questions and share resources. You can join any of dozens of different research groups. Join a group to get help yourself, or to share your expertise with others. Groups cover geographical areas, as well as areas of interest. Example group include the likes of Georgia, Germany, Greece, Genetic Genealogy, Adoption, African American Genealogy Research, First Nations of North America, Family Bibles, just to name a few.

Need help with your research? Once you join a group you can:

  • ask questions
  • upload documents and get help with translation
  • participate in discussions
  • learn about upcoming webinars
  • discover new resources

Or join a group to offer your help to others by:

  • answering questions
  • translating documents
  • sharing new resources

Get involved and make these groups more valuable for everyone! Like FamilySearch itself, these community research groups are available to you absolutely free of charge. Start here to find a group that interests you:

MyHeritage One of a Kind Offer

I’m excited to share a one-of-a-kind offer from MyHeritage for the month of June, something I think your readers and followers will be very interested to hear!

Starting tomorrow, June 1, each day of the month a different and significant historical record collection will be available for free!

The collections we have chosen for this offer were handpicked for their value for family historians and include collections that are exclusive to MyHeritage. Among them are the Sweden Household Examination Books, 1840–1947, 1940 Denmark Census, and U.S. City Directories. Altogether, we’ll be providing free access to more than 2 billion historical records throughout June!

All the collections are available on www.myheritage.com/research, and you can find the full schedule for the free collections, including direct links, on our blog.

This just might be the chance your readers and followers have been waiting for, and we are pleased to offer this as part of our effort to provide people with more opportunities and resources to further their genealogy research while at home.

Enjoy and stay safe, Daniel Horowitz
