Whatcom Genealogical Society New Venue

Whatcom Genealogical Society has a new venue starting with our Monday, September 13th meeting at 2 pm:  The Pioneer Pavilion at Pioneer Park, 2007 Cherry Street in Ferndale!   It is a fantastic building with a built-in screen and sound system, no stairs to navigate, and lots and lots of free parking, and restrooms.

It is a very large venue so it will be easy to practice physical distancing.  Please wear a mask.

The September meeting will be an opportunity for folks to discuss what they have been working on for the last 18 months, and to meet the new Board members.

Tri-City Genealogical Society September Meeting

Please join us on September 8 for the TCGS presentation of America’s Turnpikes, Rivers, and Canals presented by Peggy Clemens Lauritzen, AG.  Presentation will be via Zoom.  See link below.

About this webinar

Roads and trails are the “go-to” places we look at first when determining how our ancestors moved throughout America. However, there were other means of transportation available to them. Could your ancestor have traveled other by-ways?

About the speaker

Peggy Clemens Lauritzen, AG, was involved in genealogy before she was even born. The daughter of avid genealogists, she was spending time in courthouses and cemeteries while other children were playing on swings and going to the beach. The love of her family’s history has never left her. With her experience as a former Family History Director, she is a frequent speaker at genealogical societies, workshops, seminars, and webinars where she loves bringing genealogy to life. Some of those would include The Ohio Genealogical Society, The Ohio State University, Brigham Young University, and many other state and local genealogy societies. She has recently completed several Legacy QuickGuides on Appalachia, which are also available on www.legacyfamilytree.com and www.amazon.com.

Dan Metzger is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Newspaper.com adds Tacoma Newspapers

The News Tribune
New Papers from Washington and Michigan! We have recently added new papers from Tacoma, Washington, and Michigan to our archives. With these new titles, we’ve added over 7 million images in July and will add another 8 million in August. We’re on track to add 40 million new pages by the end of the year! Our archives keep growing and we’re working hard to bring added value to your Newspapers.com subscription. Washington: In 1873, the Tacoma area was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Tacoma was incorporated in 1875, and in 1880 the weekly Tacoma Ledger was founded. The News Tribune traces its roots back to that paper, which became The Tacoma Daily Ledger. The Daily Ledger merged with The News and the Tacoma Tribune to form the Tacoma News Tribune and Ledger in 1918. The paper adopted the name Tacoma News Tribune in 1979, and our archives for The News Tribune date back to 1889. Read more about these papers

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week Freedmen’s Bureau Collection

TIP OF THE WEEK –
THE FREEDMEN’S BUREAU COLLECTION

A bill, passed by U.S. Congress and signed by President Abe Lincoln, established the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands on March 3, 1865. It was part of their plan for reconstructing the post-Civil War South. This bureau, commonly known as the Freedmen’s Bureau, was headed by Union Army General Oliver Otis Howard (Yes, Howard University was named for him).  President Andrew Jackson and the Southern States were vehemently opposed to the Freedmen’s Bureau and it was disbanded in 1872.

From 1865-1872, the Freedmen’s Bureau was charged with overseeing the transition to freedom for over 4 million formerly enslaved people, providing assistance to them, as well as to poor whites and veterans displaced by the Civil War.

The 3.5 million records of the Freedmen’s Bureau have long been available on microfiche at the National Archives. Now that these records have been transcribed and digitized, they are searchable, and available for free to everyone via Ancestry. If you are not an Ancestry subscriber, you simply need to open a free Ancestry guest account.

These records may help African Americans trace their family’s history in America.

The scope of these records includes, but is not limited to:

  • Legalization of marriages entered into during slavery
  • Labor contracts with land owners
  • Bounty claims, pensions, and back pay for soldiers
  • Apprenticeship disputes and complaints

Watch this short video describing the interesting information you can find in this varied collection of records from the Freedmen’s Bureau:

ONLINE NETWORKING WITH SGS

Networking is about sharing. It is as important in genealogy as it is in business. At SGS there are two online networking opportunities at your disposal. You can take advantage of either of these without leaving the comfort of your home.

On most Wednesdays, from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM Pacific Time, “Brags and Bricks”, a SGS special interest group meets via Zoom. Come share your story, share your knowledge, ask a question, ask for help, start a discussion, or just socialize with the group.

Available 24/7, is the Seattle Genealogical Society Networking Group on Facebook. It is a “closed” group, which means anyone on Facebook can find the group, but only members may view the posts or the names of others in the group .

Everyone, SGS member or non-member alike, is welcome. You simply need to request membership by clicking the “Join Group” icon. The group administrator will review your request and respond.

The opening statement for this SGS Networking group on Facebook says, “We invite you to join us for discussions about the collections and events sponsored by the Seattle Genealogical Society & Library, to discuss your current research interests, hunting down records and cemetery research in the PNW, and to socialize with other professionals and hobbyists from Washington and beyond”. So why not submit your “Join Group” request today?
SGS Family History Writing Contest
There’s still time! The deadline for submitting your entry for this year’s family history writing contest is September 30, 2021. The theme is They Survived and takes its cue from events of the past year and earlier – the pandemic, floods, fires, droughts, heat waves, racial and ethnic strife, and more. Tell us the story of your ancestor and the hardship he or she endured.

First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded. The winning story will be published in the Journal of the Seattle Genealogical Society.

  • Keep the word count under 3,000, and submit an MS Word document.
  • Cite your sources as endnotes (interviews, letters, books, websites, censuses, etc.).
  • Unpublished works are preferred. If your story has been published before, ensure you have permission to republish. Let us know the name and date of publication.
  • A committee will review all submissions and award prizes. Some entries selected for publication will receive prizes.
  • Subjects need not relate to Washington, the Pacific Northwest, or the United States.
  • The committee makes all decisions, and all decisions are final.

Need to talk about your ideas? Email us at publications@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org, and we will get in touch.

South King County Genealogical Society Five Year Plan: Call for Volunteers
Winona Laird has volunteered to chair the committee, which will meet virtually via Zoom. South King County is changing and we need to grow and change with it! We need to reach out beyond serving our present membership, in order to better serve the larger community. Our sessions in partnership with the King County Library System and some of the area historical societies is part of that; how can we reach out even more? Please write to president@skcgs.org to volunteer.

A note of thanks to the many organizations that help spread the word about our society. Recent promoters of our activities include the Genealogical Forum of Oregon (gfo.org), the Tri-City Genealogical Society (tricitygenealogicalsociety.org), and Barbara Mattoon, former SKCGS president, in a PEO group presentation. The Washington State Genealogical Society Blog faithfully promotes our events, and even tweet about them! http://wp.wasgs.org/ @WSGSociety
