Dear members, patrons and valued friends of Heritage Quest Research Library,
Many of you may have already heard the devastating news surrounding the fire this morning in Sumner, Washington and I am sure you have a million questions regarding the library’s viability and future. Let me begin by stating “We are still here, and we will get through this.”
In the short term as we have yet to be allowed in the building, we will be closed for the next week or so. There is much to get through with all the intricacies involved in a fire. We are hoping for minimal damage, considering the fire was just next door and there was a fire wall between the businesses. We have sustained some water damage, but again we hope minimal. We will continue to move forward making the best possible decisions regarding the future of HQRL.
We hope for your continued support and patience as we get through this stressful time.
David Franklin, Tacoma’s only Black naval Civil War veteran, was honored recently with the recognition he earned and deserved — a marble headstone and ceremony honoring his service at the Oakwood Hill Cemetery in Tacoma. Read about the tenacious historian who made that happen. https://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/article266440441.html
If you have a genealogy- or local history-related story that you’d like to share with almost 1,000 readers, send it to WSGSBlog@wasgs.org. We love to share local stories.

Washington State Archives will present another edition of “Stump the Archivist,” a Q&A webinar for researchers of all experience levels, on May 20 at 10 a.m. Bring your questions and a notebook, and chat with Research Archivist Tracy Rebstock! Learn how to use state and local government records in your historical research or family history. New records are added to our collections all the time. Updates to vital records means more access to birth, death, marriage, and divorce collections. Rebstock will talk about criminal records and then take your questions so you can dig deeper into your research. (Your questions don’t need to be related to criminal records.) Register here. It is free to attend this event. Visit our YouTube channel to view past webinars.
You are free to copy articles to any non-commercial web site or message board or printed publication you wish. Don’t bother to ask permission, just do it.
