Seattle Genealogical Society is partnering with the Puget Sound Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists (PS-APG) to host an “Ask the Experts” event!

Participants can sign up for a free 20-minute consultation with a professional genealogist. The professional will offer guidance on how to move forward with a research question, which might be just what you need to get past a brick wall!

AN UPGRADE AT THE SGS LIBRARY

Did you know that when you access Ancestry.com at the Seattle Genealogical Library you can now get FULL access to Newspapers.com? Well, it is true! We have upgraded our membership in order to provide this wonderful resource to our patrons. Remember, you must use the Patron Computers IN the Library in order to access the full Newspapers.com.  We are looking forward to seeing your smiling face as you find what you need in our library.

DIGGING DEEPER WORKSHOP: THE GPS

The Genealogical Proof Standard, or GPS, serves as a guide to our genealogical work, but it is probably the most misunderstood of the many genealogical principles that apply to our everyday work. This intensive session will look at all five elements of the GPS, dissecting each one individually and then collectively to gain a better understanding of its application and benefit. Foundational vocabulary will be covered. This is an interactive workshop so bring a research question of your own to work on. You should be able to identify one individual with some known facts that make him/her unique in the world. This is a beta test workshop. We will stop in the middle of the session and have a debrief of the effectiveness of the exercises.

Mark your calendar. This workshop will take place at the SGS library on Sunday, August 19, 2018 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.   

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DAY
SEPTEMBER 24, 2018

10:30 AM – 7:00 PM

The Board of Directors will host a Volunteer Appreciation Day for all SGS volunteers at the library. Volunteers of the Quarter for 2017-2018 will be recognized, the Board of Directors will be on hand to celebrate your hard work and achievements and help with your genealogical questions. Raffle includes a DNA test kit and more!
Stop by for an hour or so, or stay for the whole day! No need to RSVP. Refreshments will be provided.

UNLOCK THE PAST IN SEATTLE

WASHINGTON STATE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
RECOGNIZES REILEY KIDD

Thirty local genealogical society members were honored as Outstanding Volunteers at the Washington State Genealogical Society Annual Meeting in Vancouver, WA, on May 26, 2018.

Congratulations to Reiley Kidd, who was nominated by the Seattle Genealogical Society as our recipient of a 2018 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award! Reiley was selected for his steadfast support of numerous SGS projects.

Reiley has been a member of SGS for over 30 years. He served on our Board of Trustees, as both Secretary and Library Trustee. Under his leadership, the society’s policies and procedures were revamped and the hard files of the organization were placed “in the cloud”. Currently he leads the Family Tree Maker SIG, writes grant applications, and coordinates the KC3I (King County Court Cases Index, 1881 – 1980) queries,  handling over 300 requests for case file information.

Committed to giving back to the society for the years of services he participated in, Mr. Kidd likes to “find things for people”, whether it is a King County Court case file number, or helping a prison inmate find the Civil War record of his ancestor.

Mr. Kidd is a respected and diligent member of the SGS, and so richly deserves this recognition.  Again, congratulations to Reiley.

ABOUT OUR LIBRARY AND BOOK SALES

The SGS Library has a wonderful team of volunteers doing various work in the Library, from binding books, sorting and cataloging periodicals, archiving donated genealogical collections to scanning and digitization work. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes at our Library every week.

We are fortunate that the Library receives many donations. Sometimes the books donated are duplicates of ones we already have in our collection. If SPL (Seattle Public Library) or Fiske Genealogical Library does not have them in their collection, then we send them to those libraries. If SPL and Fiske do have them, then we put them on our “Book Sale” shelves in the SGS Library for a very good price. This is an excellent way to increase your personal genealogical library by searching through our “Sale Books” shelves to see if there is something that you can use. We NEVER sell any books from our permanent collection, because we want you to be able to come to the Library to use them. Seattle Genealogical Society Library is a useful resource, come in and see us.

We also sell our duplicate books on eBay. Dona Bubelis is a trusted volunteer in the Library who is our eBay Sales Manager. She has generated over $200 year-to-date in sales for the Library. Not only does she put the duplicate books on sale on eBay, she also packages and mails them for us. She spends much time searching to see if these books will be good buys for people. Her work is much appreciated; thank you, Dona.

JANICE LOVELACE,
VOLUNTEER OF SPRING QUARTER

Each quarter, the Seattle Genealogical Society recognizes one volunteer as our Volunteer of the Quarter. Our Spring Volunteer of the Quarter is Janice Lovelace, current Director of Education at SGS.

Janice has been an SGS member for over five years and a volunteer for most of that time. Janice brings a strong academic and teaching background to her volunteer work at SGS. She taught college-level social sciences for more than 30 years. Most of her teaching experience focused on Psychology and she also taught American Cultural Studies.

In 2012, Janice completed the Certificate in Genealogy and Family History at University of Washington (Professional and Continuing Education) and in 2013, she completed the Certificate in Genealogical Research at Boston University. Since 2013, Janice has been lecturing nationally at Genealogical conferences on a wide variety of topics and she is known as an expert on African-American genealogy. She authored National Genealogical Society’s course CGS: African American Roots: A Historical Perspective. Janice is also an instructor for Midwest African American Genealogical Institute. Janice’s presentations for SGS have been on the subjects of Beginning Genealogy, African-American Genealogy, How to Use Newspapers,  and Using the Census, as well as many others.

Janice served as Vice President of the SGS Board of Directors for two years, then served on the Education Committee last year. She helped implement and plan the Second Saturday Speaker Series which launched in September 2017. One goal of the Speaker Series is to bring people to the library to learn about and use our space, increase member participation, reach out to the wider community and provide a variety of educational experiences on a consistent basis. The series has been popular, with an audience of 20 – 40 people at each presentation. Janice was recently elected Director of Education and hopes to continue building a consistent educational program for SGS. The Speaker Series will be on hiatus this summer but watch for upcoming presentations on the SGS website:

In addition to her work as a teacher, lecturer, and volunteer for SGS, Janice has been on a variety of boards focusing on women’s and health issues. In her spare time, Janice enjoys gardening, growing and using herbs, cooking, spending time with grandkids, traveling, reading and writing. Two of her favorite and more recent trips were to New Zealand and Ireland. Janice enjoys photographing the natural beauty she observes on her travels.

If you have not been to one of our Second Saturday Speaker Series, join us at the SGS Library when the series resumes in September. Thank you Janice for your contributions to the continued excellence in our educational programs.

SEATTLE CENTRAL SCHOOL

INDEXING PROJECT
Many years ago, members of Seattle Genealogical Society made copies of pages of lists of students of the Seattle Central School in 1906-1907 and 1907-1908 school years. In most cases, each page contains the students in a particular class, for instance, Mrs. Tomas’s 1st grade class in 1906-1907.

We would like to make these handwritten lists available to researchers, which requires indexing of names to establish a searchable database. Our indexing project is to capture the names of all the students in a given class. Only the names of the students are to be indexed, so it will go very fast. The other information (parent name, address)  will be viewable by researchers by viewing the page image.  Since these lists cover years between census this data can be valuable to researchers.

We invite all who wish to participate in indexing from the comfort of your own home to join us in indexing this valuable set of records.
The project is available on the Crowd Source Indexing website and can be found by “Viewing All Projects” and selecting Seattle Geographical Location. For those new to indexing, simply register on the website, join the SGS group, find the available projects and you are ready to index. Please be sure to read the projects instructions before starting the project.
