Carrie Bergquist Named One of WSGS’s Outstanding Volunteers in 2025

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized over 600 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2025 award recipients and learn why they received they received a WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing Carrie Cartwright Bergquist of Renton, Washington who was selected by the Grays Harbor Genealogical Society as its recipient of a WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

The Grays Harbor Genealogical Society (GHGS) won big when it welcomed Carrie into its membership just a few years ago. Carrie was already president of the North Beach Genealogy Society in Ocean Shores. She was already providing free genealogy research services to her community there, and she was already active in a local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

When Carrie joined GHGS, she quickly took on even more responsibility. She began as a member of our program committee and continues in that role. She then became chair of the research committee and continues in that role. She also serves as one of our trustees. Carrie is a frequent volunteer for our genealogy cafes. In her spare time, she puts on training classes for those new to genealogy research. Most recently, Carrie became a board member of the Renton Historical Society. Carrie is wise, creative, and easy going. She can be counted on consistently and is a cheerleader for others. GHGS could not function without volunteers like Carrie.

John Hughes To Talk About Latest Book

The Grays Harbor Genealogical Society is hosting local favorite John Hughes at their next meeting, Saturday July 12, 2025. The program begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Hoquiam Library and is open to the public.

John, now fully retired as the State Historian, will talk about his latest book, New Land, which is the story of how Southeast Asian refugees found a home in Washington state in the fallout of the Fall of Saigon in Vietnam in 1975. New Land, which was John’s final book project as our state historian, revisits several of those former refugees to tell their stories of life in America. Several of those stories happened in Willapa Harbor in Pacific County. Regardless of how you view today’s debate on immigration, you may find some surprises in these stories.

For many of us, John is a local treasure. He’s a home-grown example of how a love of Grays Harbor history and an appreciation for people who’ve stepped up and made a difference in our community and our state can motivate and inspire us to keep going, keep trying to make a difference.

The hybrid meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. and is open to all. The in-person meeting will be at the Hoquiam Library, 420 7th Avenue, Hoquiam. For a Zoom link, email Info@graysharborgenealogy.com.

Diane Carter Named One of WSGS’s Outstanding Volunteers in 2024

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized over 600 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2024 award recipients and learn why they received they received a WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing Diane Huntley Carter of Aberdeen, Washington who was selected by the Grays Harbor Genealogical Society as its recipient of a WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Diane, a longtime professor of life sciences, has worn many hats in her retirement years. She was past president of the North Beach Genealogy Society at Ocean Shores before joining GHGS in 2016. She currently serves as first vice president and is a knowledgeable resource for new leaders.

Diane is also an engaging public speaker who has helped train the membership on how to understand DNA results in researching family history.

Diane’s primary focus, though, is with the Robert Gray chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Diane serves as its Registrar, a position that requires much time, energy, and focus to help potential members prove their lineage to an American patriot.

Diane is also a promoter of family history to the public at large. She’s a regular guest on Timber Country radio in Aberdeen, where she uses her wit and intelligence to talk about local topics, including happenings with GHGS and DAR.

Jo Linker Named One of WSGS’s Outstanding Volunteers in 2023

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized over 600 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2023 award recipients and learn why they received the 2023 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing Jo Linker of Aberdeen, Washington, who was nominated by the Grays Harbor Genealogical Society (GHGS).

In 2010, Jo Linker became one of eight new members in Grays Harbor Genealogy Society. Today, she is the only one of those eight who is still active!

Jo works behind the scenes for the good of the society – providing refreshments for meetings, volunteering for special projects, and helping others at the Genealogy Café. In 2013 Jo was part of a committee that organized a successful workshop featuring expert genealogist and popular lecturer Mary Kathryn Kozy. In 2015 and 2016, she served as a trustee.

Jo’s biggest contribution, however, has been as treasurer. In late 2015, the society’s longtime treasurer passed away leaving a huge void and a position no one wanted. Jo stepped up and has held the position for seven years. She has attended a number of statewide and regional genealogy conferences to hone her skills and stay current in the genealogy field.
