Presentation: Tracing Ancestors through Slavery and Freedom: Two Cases from Indian Ocean Islands
Researching slave ancestors overseas can be challenging due to naming and record-keeping practices. Professor Sue Peabody at Washington State University Vancouver will discuss two projects: 1) her recent prize-winning book, Madeleine’s Children: Family, Freedom, Secrets, and Lies in France’s Indian Ocean Colonies (Oxford, 2017), and 2) her new project: The Failure of the Succès: Anatomy of a Slave Smuggling Voyage. Both projects involve the careful reconstruction of families in France’s Indian Ocean Colonies of Réunion and Mauritius (with asides to Bengal and Mozambique) in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries using online databases and digital civil status records.

August 2018 finds a number of JCGS volunteers gearing up for several educational events that will occur in the Fall. We are offering a Beginners Class starting the 1st of October. However, the registration deadline is in September. Speaking of September, September’s monthly program on Saturday, the 15th for members and the public will be “Bagging a Live One: Reverse Genealogy in Action” given by Mary Roddy. In November, a large and exciting event will be presenting CeCe Moore, Genetic Genealogist, in a full day of lectures at a spacious venue in Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend. Presenter: Dorothy Pretare started collecting family history in 1995 and is active in 2 local genealogical societies, leader of the EGS German Interest Group and a member of 3 societies in Minnesota. In 2008, she visited her ancestral villages in old East Germany and present day Poland.

Changes to Genealogy Library Volunteers Schedule
Beginning Saturday, October 6, 2018 Skagit Valley Genealogical Society (SVGS) genealogy library volunteers will begin a new schedule. Genealogy volunteers will be available from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at the Burlington Public Library, 820 E. Washington Avenue to help visitors with their family history research. Members of SVGS are stationed in the genealogy section on the first Saturday of the month between 10:00am-Noon (except if the Saturday is during a holiday weekend such as July 4th, Labor Day or New Year’s.) The genealogy library volunteers will not do the research for you but they will give you an orientation to the research resources and materials available for your use in the library, and give some helpful suggestions. The Skagit Valley Genealogical Society’s book collection now has over 2000 reference books on various genealogy research related topics. Free access to Ancestry.com Library Edition is also available at the Burlington Library. You do not have to have a Burlington Library card to use the database resources. Note: No volunteers on Sat.
