Jill is the founder of the Certification Discussion Group and a co-founder of the Applied Genealogy Institute, a practicum-based educational opportunity for intermediate and advanced learners. Jill has been published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, the Swedish American Genealogist, and many others. Jill is past president of the Seattle Genealogical Society and contributes to many local genealogical societies.

Yet the large language models powering today’s artificial intelligence (AI) systems are weak with facts though great with words. Their weakness with facts and research, however, hardly renders them useless to genealogists. Knowing the benefits and limits of artificial intelligence empowers genealogists today and helps us recognize breakthroughs tomorrow. The use cases here illustrate how researchers are successfully using AI Genealogy today.
Stephen Little says about himself: As the AI Program Director for the National Genealogical Society, I research AI tools for genealogical use, develop educational programs about AI in genealogy, advise our team on AI-related matters, lead creation of guidelines for ethical AI use in genealogy, and produce various content like courses and articles on the topic. It’s all about integrating AI into family history research.
I trace my deep roots to one Appalachian county, where, by 1820, all 32 of my 3rd-great-grandparents had settled—many even earlier than that. In fact, 60 of my most recent ancestors were all born, lived, and died there, in Ashe County, NC. My passion lies in AI and genetic genealogy: with a keen interest in endogamy, pedigree collapse, and the art of deciphering multiple relationships through DNA segment triangulation, and an insatiable curiosity to explore beneficial uses and current limits of artificial intelligence in genealogy. Beyond genealogy, I wear many hats: I’m a husband and a dad, a Methodist pastor, and a Virginian. My hobbies span from bird watching and sky gazing to chess and film. Topic: A Day in the Life of Your German Ancestor Most family history researchers are interested in the daily events in the lives of their ancestors. This presentation deals with the common activities of families on the farm and in the trades. The details provided represent the culmination of the presenter’s reading on the topic over the last two decades, from hard-to-find literature available only to the German audience.
Roger P. Minert received his doctoral degree from The Ohio State University in German language history and second language acquisition theory. He taught German language and history for ten years, and then became a professional family history researcher. Accredited by the Family History Library for research in Germany and Austria, he worked for twelve years as a private genealogical researcher. From 2003 to 2019, he served as a professor of family history at Brigham Young University. The author of more than 200 publications, he directs the research program German Immigrants in American Church Records [GIACR], the series now consists of 40 volumes. In 2019, Minert was recognized for his years of service to the Palatines to America Society and also received the “Shirley Riemer Lifetime Achievement Award” from the International German Genealogy Partnership. In 2020, he was named a fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association. From his home in Provo, Utah he continues to write articles on Germanic genealogy, compile new GIACR volumes, and participate in conferences nation-wide.

Bio: David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist, has been on staff with American Ancestors since 1993. He is an internationally recognized speaker on the topics of genealogy and history, as well as a published author. He is an elected Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston MA.
There will be a short break with refreshments. The monthly meeting will follow.
DIG – DNA Special Interest Group

This group works together to develop a better understanding of DNA techniques and strategies for finding relatives, discuss and review new DNA developments and tools and help members with their research problems. Since 1898 August, Vol. 18, No. 8NEW MORE POWERFUL & SECURETECHNOLOGY TOOLS FOR CGS I am excited to share that at the July Board of Directors meeting the board approved a major technology upgrade for our library. The new computers and equipment will speed up and vastly enhance how everything works for volunteers and all visitors to the library. Complementing the faster WiFi and fiber internet connection we installed last year, all of the computers for patrons and volunteers will perform significantly faster, be more secure, and run the current version of Microsoft Windows. Along with the new computers come high-definition monitors, and two of the computers will be set up with dual monitors. For those of you who use two monitors at home you know how this set up makes research much more efficient. For those who don’t already use dual monitors – you’ll find out how great they are and want one at home. One of the new computers will finally enable library patrons to make full use of the large-format overhead scanner we bought last year: Quickly and easily restore those damaged, faded photographs of your grandparents’ families then create narrated slide show videos using Vivid-Pix Memory Station. We’re also installing Adobe Acrobat so that you’ll be able to quickly and easily convert scanned documents into searchable PDFs. It has been almost ten years since we did an upgrade of this magnitude and it’s sorely needed. These tools will take CGS to the next level of capability and will provide our members with what you need to tell your family’s story. The CGS board and volunteers are constantly thinking about how to enhance the benefits to our members. We encourage you to visit the library and make use of these new tools. BOOKS AVAILABLE AT THE LIBRARY Members of the Library Committee continue to actively work on de accessioning books that have been digitized and are available online for free from one or more reliable sources such as the FamilySearch website. We are currently focusing on our large collection of Family Histories. If you donated a family history that has since been digitized and is available online, let us know if you’d like to have the book returned to you. Other members of the committee are starting to look at books published before 1923 that are out of copyright. We are doing this to make room for new books and to reduce the size of the library in case we decide to relocate when our lease is up in 2027. Might you be interested in having one or more of these de accessioned books? If so, we’d like to know about it. Next time you are in the library make a point of looking at the collection in your area of interest, and if you find a book you’d like to have, put a post-it with your name and contact information inside the front cover. If we decide to remove that book for any reason – like we’ve acquired a newer version – we will let you know it is available. If you know the title of a book, you’d like to have but are unable to come into the library, send a message to library@californiaancestors.org. Not all books are being considered for removal. NEW MORE POWERFUL & SECURE TECHNOLOGY TOOLS FOR CGS I am excited to share that at the July Board of Directors meeting the board approved a major technology upgrade for our library. The new computers and equipment will speed up and vastly enhance how everything works for volunteers and all visitors to the library. Complementing the faster WiFi and fiber internet connection we installed last year, all of the computers for patrons and volunteers will perform significantly faster, be more secure, and run the current version of Microsoft Windows.
