SECOND SATURDAY SERIES IN NOVEMBER WILL
FEATURE DAWN BINGAMANGuest speaker, Dawn Bingaman, will present Chronicling America Historic American Newspapers and Beyond, at the SGS Library, Saturday, November 10, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.Nearly 14 million historic newspaper pages have been digitized and placed online in the last 11 years at the Library of Congress. Are your ancestors’ stories included among them? Learn a bit about the history of the Chronicling America project, take a tour of the website and perhaps, most importantly, discover a few of the state projects that have continued the work and have digitized even more of their state’s newspapers.Dawn began working on her genealogy as part of a Girl Scout project many years ago and continues to research almost daily. In 2011, she began ramping up her skill set by attending week-long genealogy institutes. She has attended all four major genealogical institutes in the United States, completing eleven courses to date. Dawn works full-time as an IT manager and formerly chaired the SGS Computer Interest Group.SGS WRITERS GROUP SEEKING
ADDITIONAL MEMBERS

The Tuesday Writer’s Group is looking for some new members, starting in January 2019, who are interested in writing their family histories. They meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the SGS Library. Just drop in. If you are interested in a safe environment for reviewing your work, learning some new techniques, and receiving external motivation for getting that long-awaited article written–this is the group for you!

RESEARCHING AT REPOSITORIES

October is American Archives Month. If you feel you’ve already found everything you can at the usual genealogy websites, don’t overlook what genealogy resources are available to you at the state archives, as well as at local, university, and historical society libraries.

Study the library website and search their online catalog and indexes to get a feel for their genealogy collections. Need ideas for records to consult? Run a search of the FamilySearch.org online catalog for your ancestors’ county or town, then browse the record categories to see the types of record collections available.

SGS HAS BECOME A FamilySearch AFFILIATE LIBRARY
THIS IS HUGE!

A notice is posted on our website and it was reported in the eNews! , but some members and patrons missed the item, so it bears repeating. SGS is now an affiliate library of FamilySearch! This is huge. Here’s the backstory and what that means for you.

We as genealogists have benefited from the LDS Mormon Church’s dedication to family history. For decades they have microfilmed historical records from all over the world. They currently have 2.4 million rolls of microfilm in their holdings and they have made much of this available to the general public through their Family History Library in Salt Lake City, their Family History Centers scattered around the globe, and FamilySearch.org, their online genealogy website. All of this, free of charge.

Microfilm is now outdated so their goal is to get all their holdings digitized by the year 2020. They state they are digitizing at a rate of 1,000 rolls of microfilm each day. Over 1.1 million rolls of their microfilms, amounting to billions of records, have already been digitized and made available online at any Family History Center. Most of these are also available at any FamilySearch Affiliate Library, such as our SGS Library. And nearly 840,000 of these rolls are available online through FamilySearch.org to everyone, everywhere, even from the comfort of home.

If you come into our library and use our patron computers, or even your own laptop, you will have access to many of the record collections that FamilySearch.org must restrict you from accessing at home. This home viewing restriction is due to contractual agreements between FamilySearch.org and the record collection’s owner. Do you remember running into these 3 icons while doing a FamilySearch.org Search Records, or Search Catalog? Here’s what the icons mean :

A Camera means the record has been digitized, and can be reviewed online by anyone logged into FamilySearch.org. Just click on the icon, and the digital image will open.
A Camera with a Key above it means access is restricted. This image can only be viewed at a Family History Center or an affiliate library. The SGS library is now an affiliate library.
A Microfilm reel icon indicates it has not been digitized yet, and is only available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, or possibly at a Family History Center that currently has a copy of that microfilm roll.

Come into the Seattle Genealogical Society Library during our normal business hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, or Sunday, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Our front desk volunteer will be glad to help you get started enjoying the benefits of SGS becoming an affiliate library of FamilySearch.org.

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week

TIP OF THE WEEK –
Washington State Library Awarded $280,000
This recent $280,000 National Endowment for the Humanities grant will enable the Washington State Library’s Washington Digital Newspaper Project to add 100,000 pages of culturally and historically significant newspapers from Asian-American, African-American, and World War II-era publications to its free public archives.

The grant is the fourth National Endowment for the Humanities award for the Digital Newspaper Project. Under the State Library’s participation in the National Digital Newspaper Program, more than 300,000 pages of historic Washington newspapers have been added to the 13 million newspaper pages publicly accessible at the Chronicling America website of the Library of Congress.

The lesson to be learned, it pays to keep checking sites such as Chronicling America often because records are being digitized so rapidly.

SGS members, the Membership Meeting is October 13, 1:00-4:00 pm. A topic of discussion will be revising the SGS bylaws. Hear from the SGS Board. The Second Saturday Series presentation that day will be The Homestead Act with Karen V Sipe.
OCTOBER IS AMERICAN ARCHIVES
& FAMILY HISTORY MONTH

So celebrate with a visit to the Seattle Central Library, October 9th, 11 am until 3 pm, Fourth Floor-Room 1, for “Faces of the Archives: Genealogical Research Using Local Collections”. Seattle Genealogical Society will be there featuring two people from our Archives Committee, Mildred Stoliker and Fred Schack.

Learn about genealogical resources at libraries, archives, and museums from any of a dozen participating institutions. There will be a half hour formal talk beginning at noon, by Paula Becker, historian and author.

This event is free, registration is not required, but space is limited so plan to arrive early.

During the entire month of October, there is a barrage of activities scheduled around Washington, and the Seattle area, to educate and entertain family historians such as yourself. A sampling:

BEGINNING RESEARCH TOOLS CLASS AT SGS
This class, taught by Linda Fitzgerald, is an introduction to the paper, internet, and other tools that a beginning genealogist will need in order to address the problem of ancestor identity. All materials needed for the class will be provided by SGS, so we ask that if you are going to attend, you RSVP by calling SGS at 206 522-8658 on or before October 27th, so we can plan accordingly.

JAPANESE GENEALOGY SEMINAR
Save the Dates! Get the word out. Coming in February, the Seattle Genealogical Society is proud to sponsor a Japanese Genealogy Seminar for individuals researching their Japanese heritage.

2 February 2019 (Saturday): all, day session; Japanese Genealogical Seminar for those beginning their quest for their Japanese heritage. Learn how to find records in the U.S. and in Japan.
3 February 2019 (Sunday): morning session; “Train the Trainers,” Japanese genealogical seminar for researchers who wish to know how to research the records of the Japanese-Americans here in the United States and in Japan in order to help others.
3 February 2019 (Sunday): afternoon session; “One-on-One,” the newly trained researchers will conduct one-on-one sessions with those who need help getting started with their research.

Interest in genealogy, or tracing our personal ancestral lineage, is increasing due to in part to television shows such as Who Do You Think You Are?, Ancestor RoadShow, and others; DNA advertisements; and continuing conversations about immigration in the political arena. Many individuals are using advertised tools to make documentary and genetic discoveries about their own families. While each ethnic group presents unique challenges, this seminar will teach Nikkei what records exist and how they can build their own family trees. This seminar will open the door to their personal heritage and how that heritage fits within the wider scope of Japanese history in the United States and in Japan.

Linda Harms Okazaki, newly back from her latest trip to Japan, will conduct the seminar and the Train the Trainer sessions. She is a nationally known Japanese-American genealogical researcher and lecturer. A charter member of the Nikkei Genealogical Society and past president of the California Genealogical Society, she is the founder and partner of Linda’s Orchard, LLC, a research company specializing in Japanese-American research. She is a bi-monthly columnist for the Nichi Bei Weekly, a board member of the Nichi Bei Foundation, and a research consultant for ProGenealogists, Salt Lake City.
