Skagit Valley Genealogical Society New Hours at Library

Changes to Genealogy Library Volunteers Schedule

Beginning Saturday, October 6, 2018 Skagit Valley Genealogical Society (SVGS) genealogy library volunteers will begin a new schedule. Genealogy volunteers will be available from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at the Burlington Public Library, 820 E. Washington Avenue to help visitors with their family history research. Members of SVGS are stationed in the genealogy section on the first Saturday of the month between 10:00am-Noon (except if the Saturday is during a holiday weekend such as July 4th, Labor Day or New Year’s.) The genealogy library volunteers will not do the research for you but they will give you an orientation to the research resources and materials available for your use in the library, and give some helpful suggestions. The Skagit Valley Genealogical Society’s book collection now has over 2000 reference books on various genealogy research related topics. Free access to Ancestry.com Library Edition is also available at the Burlington Library. You do not have to have a Burlington Library card to use the database resources. Note: No volunteers on Sat. Sept. 1 due to the Labor Day holiday weekend. For details call: Margie Wilson 360-757-6224, rootsproject@frontier.com. For more information about upcoming SVGS educational programs or how to become a member of the genealogy society visit: www.skagitvalleygenealogy.org.

Friday Serendipity

This was just too good not to share: San Antonio, Texas, just a couple of weeks ago. Very pregnant lady was having contractions when she and husband stopped at a Chick-fil-A restaurant to drop off their kids. Mom had to use the restroom…… and baby girl Gracelyn came… in the bathroom! Company says “Gracelyn will have free Chick-fil-A for life and a job when she turns 14.”  Like I said, too good not to share.

GFO’s August GenTalk: Getting Ready to Check Out

Librarian working at the Pointe Coupee Parish Parish library in New Roads Louisiana in 1936

GFO’s Multipurpose Room, Saturday, August 18th, 2 – 3 p.m.

Presenter: Leslie Brinkley Lawson

As genealogists, we love end-of-life records: death certificates, probate/estate paperwork, cemetery records, obituaries, etc. But in our personal lives, maybe we’re not so enthusiastic. Learn how to plan for the inevitable, for the sake of your genealogy research and for your loved ones. It doesn’t have to be expensive, and it doesn’t have to be difficult, let Leslie show you how.

Leslie Brinkley Lawson is a full-time professional genealogist, specializing in forensic genealogy (missing / unknown heirs, and probate research). She is credentialed by the Council for the Advancement of Forensic Genealogy (CAFG), and is a past president (2010-2015). She is the president of the Oregon Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), and is a member of the GFO.

This event is free and open to the public.

Grays Harbor Fire Update

The Grays Harbor Genealogical Society is rising from the ashes after the total loss of their research library in a raging fire on June 9, 2018. The 3-alarm fire at the Aberdeen Armory also destroyed most of the Aberdeen Museum of History, Coastal Community Action and Aberdeen Senior Center. Occupants are still unable to get inside the building according to the Daily World newspaper update on July 27, 2018.

In the meantime, GHGS is moving ahead, thanks in large part to the generosity of many individuals, organizations and genealogical societies. The Hoquiam Library has offered a temporary space to set up shop. With funds collected from the Go Fund Me campaign and donations directly to GHGS, a copy machine and computer have been purchased and installed. Members are hoping to purchase a second computer, printer, office furniture and office supplies soon.

Two fundraising events benefiting the society have been organized. The American Legion Post 5 (Aberdeen) is sponsoring two bingo sessions and a raffle on Saturday, August 11. All proceeds from the bingo sessions, food and raffle will go directly to GHGS. A second fundraiser will be a workshop with Portland-area genealogist Pam Vestal on Saturday, October 13. Ms. Vestal reached out and generously offered to donate her time and talent at a three-session workshop. More information will be forthcoming.

For more information about the Grays Harbor Genealogical Society, the fire or the research library, contact GHGS President Gary Parfitt.

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week

TIP OF THE WEEK –
A GREAT RESOURCE FOR WESTERN
NORTH CAROLINA RESEARCH: the BGSOTC

A terrific genealogical society, the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County, has published abstracts of many of the surviving documents in western North Carolina. Tryon County was created in 1769 and in 1779 its name was changed to Lincoln County. While Old Tryon County no longer exists, it included the geographic area that is now Rutherford, Cleveland, Lincoln, and Gaston counties of North Carolina, and Cherokee and York Counties of South Carolina, plus portions of several NC and SC counties that border these counties – A LARGE AREA.

This wonderful society’s publication, Bulletin of the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County (BGSOTC for short) began in 1973, and its issues contain abstracts of all types of records – wills, deeds, court records, family histories, etc. – from all of the counties listed above.

It gets better! They’ve created an every-name index for the issues of the BGSOTC from 1992 to the present, and placed it online at http://www.oldtryon.com/

If you have ancestors in this part of western NC or upper SC, check out this index. You can search for your ancestors from the comfort of home!

SGS has BGSOTC issues from 1998 to the present, so if you find one of your ancestors in the online index, the issue may well be in our collection.

DIGGING DEEPER WORKSHOP: THE GPS

The Genealogical Proof Standard, or GPS, serves as a guide to our genealogical work, but it is probably the most misunderstood of the many genealogical principles that apply to our everyday work. This intensive session will look at all five elements of the GPS, dissecting each one individually and then collectively to gain a better understanding of its application and benefit. Foundational vocabulary will be covered. This is an interactive workshop so bring a research question of your own to work on. You should be able to identify one individual with some known facts that make him/her unique in the world. This is a beta test workshop. We will stop in the middle of the session and have a debrief of the effectiveness of the exercises.

Mark your calendar. This workshop will take place at the SGS library on Sunday, August 19, 2018 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

Northwest Genealogy Conference Still Has Room for You

Are you looking for a genealogical learning experience on par with the big national conferences, but with a more intimate setting and personal feel? If so, the Northwest Genealogy Conference is the conference for you! The conference is August 15 – 19, 2018, at the Byrnes Performing Art Center in Arlington, Washington — and still has spots open. To register, click here.

Like the national conferences, there are nationally known speakers on a wide range of topics. This year’s keynote speakers, Ce Ce Moore, Beth Foulk and Peggy Lauritzen, are well known in genealogical circles. In fact, you’ve likely heard about Ce Ce in the news lately. She’s garnered national attention for the DNA assistance she provided to law enforcement which led to arrests in several murder cold cases.

For the beginning genealogist (and those needing a “refresher”), there will be a free class on Wednesday, the 15th, and for the more serious, there are additional in-depth workshops offered that day.

Unlike the big conferences, NWGC offers a much more intimate and personal setting with much less walking. Along with the great education that you will receive, there are also fun activities such as “Dress as Your Ancestor Day,” the cousin match board, door prizes and more.

See www.nwgc.org for more information and to register. See you there!

Wednesday Nostalgia

Ah, summertime. Double ah, ice cream time. How come summer and ice cream go together? And so many flavors! What is your favorite? According to a bit in the Tidbits grocery-store-newspaper, here are America’s Top Ten Ice Cream Flavors:

  1. Vanilla
  2. Chocolate
  3. Cookies N’ Cream
  4. Mint Chocolate Chip
  5. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  6. Buttered Pecan
  7. Cookie Dough
  8. Strawberry
  9. Moose Tracks
  10. Neapolitan

Notice the common thread of CHOCOLATE here?? My favorite would be something called Mississippi Mud…… it was like frozen fudge. Ohmy, ohmy.
