Good research requires a variety of resources that span libraries, archives, museums, digital collections, and home sources. In this presentation we will take a look at resources that can help you go beyond a simple name and help tell the story of your ancestor’s lives.
Gena Philibert-Ortega is an author, researcher, and instructor whose focus is genealogy, social and women’s history. She holds a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Psychology and Women’s Studies) and a Master’s degree in Religion. Her published works include two books, numerous articles published in magazines and online, as well as five editions of the Tracing Your Ancestors series from Morsehead Publishing. She is the editor of the Utah Genealogical Association’s magazine, Crossroads. Her writings can be found on her blogs, Gena’s Genealogy and Food.Family.Ephemera as well as the GenealogyBank blog. She has presented to diverse groups worldwide including the Legacy Family Tree Webinar series. Her current research includes women’s repatriation and citizenship in the 20th century, foodways and community in fundraising cookbooks, and women’s material culture.

DONE! The last major task in the restructuring of our library following our move to the Good Shepherd Center has been completed. Over 100 boxes of books, in storage and earmarked for shipment to the Internet Archives, needed to be unpacked, cataloged for our records, and then repacked into heavy duty shipping boxes. This took SGS members Allegra Anderson, Melanie Moser, Woods Fairbanks, and Ellen Peterson (pictured below), as well as Kathi, SGS Library Director, and Jim Secan, SGS President, two days. Later Kathi and Woods helped load the shipper’s truck, thus starting these books on the journey to their new home.
Many thanks from the SGS board to these four SGS members who quite literally volunteered to do the heavy lifting.

Two of the founders of the Applied Genealogy Institute are names that should be familiar to you from programs you’ve attended at SGS, Jill Morelli, CG, and Mary Kircher Roddy, CG. Jill prepared the message below to introduce the upcoming classes that will be able next spring.
‘Applied Genealogy Institute is excited to announce the next series of educational offerings to the genealogical community for our Spring semester. Whether you are educational addicts like we are or one who just wants to “do it right,” you will find a course for you in the Spring offerings.
Five courses will be offered: “Foundations I: Using the Records,” “Advanced Swedish Genealogy,” “Advanced Genetic Genealogy,” “Catholic Records” and “Getting Lost in Ledgers.” Registration will open after the first of the year.
