Winona I. Laird is a Professional Genealogist.  She is a member of APG, NGS, FGS and a past President of South King County Gen Society as well as a member of several other Gen Societies. Winona is a member of the Mary Fell Stevenson Chapter, NSDAR and is the Registrar for the Chapter.  She is also the owner of the Genealogy Education Center in Kent, WA.  
Winona began her genealogy research when she was a small child. What began as a class project became a lifelong journey to find and write the stories of her ancestors.

Judy has been doing genealogy off and on for over 30 years. She has completed several formal education programs and holds genealogy certificates from National Institute for Genealogical Studies and Boston University.  Judy also holds a business degree from Washington State University.  
Judy has memberships in several genealogy societies and is the current Bookstore Manager for Heritage Quest Research library. She is also a Board member for TPCGS.
DNA TOOLS (Emphasis on Ancestry’s Tools) Discussion and examples of several tools that are currently available to assist you in using your DNA results to advance your genealogy research.  DNA Painter, GEDmatch, Ancestry’s matches and groups, along with ThruLines are the tools that will be discussed.
If you have matches on Ancestry that do not have a tree or are private, Judy will walk you through how to use the data with others to help identify possible relationships/DNA connections.

A Proud Heritage African American Family History Event

Attend the African American Family History Event  on February 5, 2022.  It will be both in person and live zoomed with some pretty great classes.

  • Thom Reed – The African American Heritage Director will speak about searching Freedman Records
  • Joe Price – BYU Records Linking Lab will speak about the African American Records Project that is assisting the International African American Family History Museum – soon to open in South Carolina

We are also hosting a DNA for beginners class, Family Search Memories and Journaling Class and a class to show the Tacoma-Pierce Records Project. We have the Tacoma Public Library Oral History Station, Scanning Station and more.  We will have grab and go breakfast foods and boxed lunches.

Dear WSGS Members,

We are off to a New Year and a change in leadership. It has been my honor to have served as your president for the past 6 years, but it is well past time for me to move on. Hopefully now I will have time to work on my own genealogy!

Kathy Sizer has been elected as your new President for 2022/2023. Please wish her well and offer any support you can. Especially now as she deals with the unexpected passing of her husband. My hope is that we can all continue to work on supporting each other as societies. We all have something to offer each other and our communities. Communication and support go a long way!

I wish to thank all of you who worked so hard over the past few years to keep WSGS viable and a continued presence in this ever-changing world we live in today. All Societies depend on our volunteers. WSGS is blessed to have some very dedicated ones. They kept us going when the going was tough. I am forever in your gratitude, amazed at your many talents and humbled by your dedication. To all of our members, thank you for continuing your support and financial contributions. You help us keep our presence in the genealogical community.

Janet is a genealogist with over 30 years experience. She is a seminar presenter, educator, and trainer in genealogy societies, libraries, retirement centers and senior centers across Washington. She has supported genealogy by volunteering in a variety of ways – newsletter editor, program coordinator, publicity, Education Director and past-president of South King County Genealogical Society (SKCGS).   She is the winner of the Washington State Genealogical Society Volunteer of the Year award for 2019.  Janet is a graduate of the University of Washington Genealogy and Family History program.  She has a B.A. (Education) degree from Central Washington University and a Master’s degree from Antioch University.  She also taught within The Boeing Company and at the University of Phoenix.

Dr. Leah Larkin presents “The Hicks Babies”

From the early 1950s to the mid-1960s, Dr. Thomas Hicks ran a community health clinic in McCaysville, Georgia. On the side, he mediated illegal adoptions, selling hundreds of newborns on the black market to couples who couldn’t have children of their own. These so-called “Hicks babies” have no paper trail to document their true parentage. DNA testing has allowed many of them to reunite with their biological families. Three case studies will demonstrate effective research strategies for unknown parentage searches using DNA.
