Seattle Genealogical Society News

JANUARY IS ALL ABOUT

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS (SIGs) AT SGS!

As previously announced, the Irish and German SIGs are coming out of dormancy and meeting virtually on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Welcome back the Irish and German SIGs beginning on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM, respectively.

In addition, SGS is excited to announce a new SIG for researchers of Japanese genealogy. We are partnering with Densho, who is looking to widen their scope to include genealogy. The inaugural meeting of the Japanese American SIG will be January 23, 2022, at 1:00 PM (Pacific), at which time participants will decide how frequently the SIG shall meet. Zoom meetings have been scheduled for the 4th Sunday of the month at 1:00 PM. Send an email message to family.history@densho.org  if you would like to participate in this meeting and be added to the mailing list for the Japanese American SIG. Caitlin Oiye Coon has graciously agreed to co-host SIG meetings, but we are looking for someone to share the leadership duties with her.  If you can help, please contact Ceil Rogers at Education@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org

So as not to intrude on your New Year’s Day celebration, The FamilySearch SIG, which usually meets on the first Saturday of the month, has postponed their meeting until Saturday, January 8, at 10:15 AM.

The DNA SIG will hold its annual session for beginners on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 9:00 AM, an hour before the regularly scheduled SIG meeting. To participate, contact Cary Bright at sgsdnasig@gmail.com

See the SGS website calendar, https://www.seagensoc.org/eventListings.php?nm=67, for details on these and all SGS SIGs.

Genealogy library hosts talk on early Chinese women in Oregon

Genealogy library hosts talk on early Chinese women in Oregon

The Genealogical Forum of Oregon, a local genealogical library, is hosting a free talk focused on the lives of the first groups of Chinese women to immigrate to Oregon. This virtual event will occur at 2:30 pm Saturday, January 15; pre-registration is required.

Archaeologists and authors Dr. Chuimei Ho and Dr. Bennet Bronson will present an illustrated lecture at the GFO’s monthly GenTalk on the topic of “Merchants’ Wives, Prostitutes and Identities In Between: Early Chinese Women in Portland.”

Dr. Chuimei Ho was born in Hong Kong and received her Ph.D. in art history and archaeology from the University of London in 1984. She arrived in the U.S. in 1987 and served as adjunct curator at the Field Museum from 1989 to 2006. In 2001 she became a founder and first president of the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, and in 2008 she founded the Chinese in Northwest America Research Committee (CINARC) with Bennet Bronson.

Dr. Bennet Bronson received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. He was Curator of Asian Archaeology and Ethnology at Chicago’s Field Museum from 1971 to 2008, has done archaeological work in Guatemala, Thailand, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, and has published two books with Chuimei Ho; Splendors of the Forbidden City, Coming Home in Gold Brocade: Chinese in Early Northwest America, and Three Chinese Temples in California.

GenTalks are monthly presentations on a wide variety of topics of genealogical interest currently provided via Zoom and always available to the public for free. If interested, sign up ahead of time at gfo.org/gentalk.

The GFO appreciates any publicity for its events. A graphic, suitable for use on a FB page, is attached.

Most Read Posts of 2021

Well another year gone. I have listed the top ten most read posts from 2021. Number one does not surprise me as many Washington genealogical societies were using the Easy Net Site. Number two has amazed me every year since 2015, and it pops up every so often as a weekly top ten most read post. I am glad to see Scribe and Roots Tech are on the list. Small Town Newspapers and Donation Land Claims are good posts. Cindi is always a top draw so not surprised she made the top ten. The Wenatchee seminar on the Central Regional Branch Archives was the only genealogical society monthly meeting to make the top ten. I was also glad the post I did on the IRS Form 990-n made the top ten as that form is very important to make sure your society keeps the non profit status it worked so hard to get.

Washington State New Non Profit Act

Last year the Washington Legislature passed an updated Non Profit Law (the last one passed in 1970) and it takes effect on January 1, 2022. While much is just changes allowing online meetings and similar language changes, there are other parts that pertain to non profits with members and to having youth on boards. There was one training session already and more to come in 2022. They are free since the Secretary of State paid the fees for all of us. Here is a list of some upcoming meetings:
