Nate’s topic: Are You Getting the Most Out on a of Your Public Library?

Nate is from the Snohomish Library will introduce strategies for using public libraries in your genealogical research and give a tour of resources and services available from Sno-Isle Libraries.

Bio: Nate has worked as a Librarian with Sno-Isle Libraries for 30 years. His love for libraries began at an early age due to being a military brat and moving every 2 years. Being a shy kid, (at least until basketball season rolled around), libraries became his refuge whenever he arrived in a new town. Over his career, genealogical research has evolved from a professional requirement to a personal passion.

There will be a short break with refreshments. The monthly meeting will follow.

SDIG – DNA Special Interest Group

Also join us at the SVGS library from 1-3pm on Thursday, April 18th for our DNA Special Interest Group (DIG). This group works together to develop a better understanding of DNA techniques and strategies for finding relatives, discuss and review new DNA developments and tools and help members with their research problems. This group meets at the same time on the 3rd Thursday of the month.

All DNA skill levels are welcome to attend.

Religious records are often important substitutes when vital records are lost or never existed, but they also add depth to our understanding of our ancestors. Beyond the expected birth, marriage, and death records, religious records can include membership lists, missionary records, financial records, disciplinary records, and more.  Many of these records are now available online.    Janice M. Sellers is related to actor Peter Sellers and to John of Gaunt, son of a king and father of a king. At least that’s what her grandparents told her. Unfortunately, they were both wrong, but that’s why she has been researching her family for almost 50 years and is now a professional genealogist who is passionate about making sure she finds the right pieces to fit your genealogical puzzle. She specializes in Jewish, Black, dual citizenship, and newspaper research and has taught at local and international events.    When: Thursday, June 6, 2024

Clallam County Genealogical Society German Immigration Patterns

Saturday, June 8th at 10:00am, the Clallam County Genealogical Society will welcome Claire Gebben, a noted genealogist.  She will appear in person at the KSQM-FM Community Room at 609 West Washington Street, in the Sequim Village Shopping Center, Sequim, WA.  Her topic will be German Immigration Patterns. 

Since the 19th Century millions of German-speaking emigrants were leaving Europe for places far and wide, especially North America.  Who were they and why did they leave?  The answer is complicated.  This talk explores waves of emigration in the historical context of wars, religious oppression, weather, economics, and other factors.  Presentation also includes a look at the patterns of settlement of German migrants on arrival in North America.

Clair Gebben is a public speaker, teacher, and writer.  She specializes in German genealogy, migration patterns and 19th century history. She has authored award winning novels and memoirs based upon the documented accounts of her ancestors.  Her articles have appeared in numerous periodicals.  Claire holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts.

Join us at our June 8th gathering, and meet Claire Gibben.  Her books will be available for purchase at that time.

Whether you haven’t taken a DNA test or you did but got discouraged and abandoned the effort, it’s time to take another look.  In 2024, DNA can answer family history questions so much more powerfully than it could even five years ago.  More people have tested, and more tools and strategies have been developed to help you find answers.  More accurate and precise ethnicity results point more meaningfully to ancestral places and populations.  Come learn what’s possible and how to set a good DNA goal (like identifying an unknown ancestor, finding or verifying birth roots, connecting with distant relatives or figuring out where an ancestor was from).  Learn about picking the right test(s) for your goal and how to turn test results into meaningful family history answers.  The best news is that you don’t have to be a scientist to make DNA discoveries.  You can do the DNA – yes, ever YOU!
