Beginning DNA for Genealogists Getting back to the basics. In this presentation, we will look at all types of DNA that are currently being used for genealogical purposes. The inheritance pattern of each will be reviewed. Identify basic information that should be provided by all testing companies. The purpose of the “admixture” will be explained. Also explained will be why your admixture percentages change from time to time. Any time remaining will be open for questions. Judy Line has been doing genealogy off and on for thirty years. General meeting followed by presentation from Susan Maza – Revolutionary War Stories: Susan is a member of D.A.R. Narcissa Whitman Chapter. She had an interest in educating herself about the time period and is now sharing what she has learned. Step back in time as she, in costumed character, shares Colonial America with us through her stories she has discovered.
The Clallam County Genealogical Society will present Claire Smith. Her topic: Getting Unstuck: Working Through Research Problems.
Claire Smith is a Professional Genealogist with certificates from Boston University, the University of Washington, and the ProGen Professional Genealogy Study Group. She is a wizard at presenting an organized approach for finding missing ancestors. A gifted and popular speaker, she includes humor and supporting details for her topic.
In this presentation she will share methodologies for breaking down your brick walls.
The program will be available to the public via Zoom or at the Clallam County Genealogical Society’s Research Center located at 403 E. 8th Street, Port Angeles. National Genealogical Society and ConferenceKeeper
Greetings, EWGS & WSGS, Karen Lehfeldt here to let you know about one of the announcements shared at the National Genealogical Society Conference and Delegate Council May 31st through June 3rd, 2023. What an exciting time I had in Richmond, Virginia as the Delegate from Eastern Washington Genealogical Society. The news: The National Genealogical Society (NGS) and Genealogy ConferenceKeeper.org, Inc. (ConferenceKeeper), announced at the NGS 2023 Family History Conference an agreement to merge before the end of the year.
ConferenceKeeper is the most complete, entirely free, online calendar of genealogy conferences and events. With the merger, ConferenceKeeper will continue to support local genealogical societies, libraries, and genealogy-related businesses by providing a wider audience for their programs. The website will offer its calendar of thousands of genealogical education opportunities as a free resource for everyone interested in furthering their knowledge of family history research. ConferenceKeeper will also continue to accept genealogy-related advertising.
National Genealogical Society member organizations will benefit from increased visibility for their events and a special advertising rate on ConferenceKeeper. Bio: Meghan Caves has nearly completed her Master’s Degree in anthropology and is pursuing her Doctorate in historical archaeology at the University of Idaho. She has worked as an archaeologist in the Pacific Northwest since 2018 and is currently an archaeological technician at the Umatilla National Forest out of the Pomeroy Ranger District in Southeastern Washington.
Meghan’s topic: Archaeology, Genealogy and A Privy
Meghan’s thesis research weaves together multiple stories of indigenous and Euro-American families who surrounded and interacted with an archaeological deposit originally excavated and analyzed in 2008 from Arlington, Washington. Meghan’s reanalysis of the archaeological assemblage employs a biographical approach, which looks at how the ‘lifetimes’ of artifacts discarded in the “privy” are connected to the lives of the Teager, Hurd, Lovelace, and Weimer families who owned and occupied the site between 1890 and 1940. In order to construct nuanced and compelling biographies of the site, she employed extensive archival and genealogical research with the help of the Stillaquamish Valley Genealogical Society in 2021. Her talk will discuss how genealogical methods were used in her research, how this kind of historical information is more broadly useful to archaeologists, and explore the ethical implications of using publicly available genealogical information for archaeological research.

This meeting will be recorded for playback by members. Lyman Draper (1815-1891) was a lifelong student of early American history. Born and raised in upstate New York, he made it his life’s work to document the history of the “heroes” of the American Revolution, especially in the upper South. During the 1840s, Draper amassed a collection of research materials that included interview notes, correspondence, clippings, transcriptions, and original historical documents. He brought the collection to Wisconsin in 1852. The Draper Collection is now a treasure trove of genealogical and historical information about individuals who lived through the American Revolution and the War of 1812. It includes the papers of Daniel Boone, George Rogers Clark, Joseph Brant, and many others; and includes references to thousands of individuals. Reference Archivist Lee Grady will present an overview of the Draper Manuscripts, and provide practical tips for genealogical researchers.
Lee Grady is Senior Reference Archivist at the Wisconsin Historical Society. He has master’s degrees in American History, and Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He has been on the staff of the Historical Society for over 25 years and has a wide range of experience with the Society’s archival collections.
