For fans of “Genealogy Roadshow”, Olympia’s own version called “Ask the Experts” from Puget Sound Chapter Association of Professional Genealogists is coming Saturday October 27 to the Olympia Center, 222 N Columbia ST from 10 am to 2 pm. ABOUT OUR PROGRAM: “Using Online Historical Jewish Newspapers for Genealogical Research”    

Many historical Jewish newspapers are now available online, with more being added regularly. Most are on free sites. This presentation gives an overview of which ones are online and where they can be found, suggests access strategies, discusses what to do if you don’t read Hebrew or Yiddish, and shows sample search results.

 

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

Janice Sellers, a professional genealogist, has been researching her family since 1975 and has conducted genealogical research for others since 2005. She is the editor of four genealogical periodicals: ZichronNote, the journal of the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society (SFBAJGS); The Baobab Tree, the journal of the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California (AAGSNC); The California Nugget, the semiannual journal of the California Genealogical Society; and the CSGA Newsletter, the newsletter of the California State Genealogical Alliance. She is also the vice president and publicity & programming director for San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society, board member and journal committee chairman for AAGSNC, board member for CSGA, and a staff member of the Oakland Regional Family History Center since 2000.

Janice has a B.A. in French with minors in Spanish and Russian and has completed graduate studies in library and information science, computer programming, and music. She has worked as an editor, indexer, and translator since 1983. Her genealogical areas of specialization are in family history research for the 18th-21st centuries, specializing in Jewish, black American, newspaper, and forensic genealogy.

Tuesday Trivia

For the everlasting record, this is a Google image of the Vantage Bridge and the photo I took on 19 Aug 2018…… the awful forest fires in our state (and Canada) have given us AWFUL, TERRIBLE smoky conditions.

If you look really close at the right side of the lower photo, you’ll see the end of the bridge.

As I zoomed along at 70 mph, I thought of how forest fires have forever been with us and how did our ancestors, who surely suffered from asthma too, dealt with such awful smoke?

Rootstech London 2019

The following announcement was written by FamilySearch, the organizers of RootsTech:

We’re thrilled to announce that the RootsTech conference is expanding to international borders! RootsTech London will take place October 24–26, 2019, at the ExCeL London Convention Centre.

“We are excited to further position RootsTech as a global community for everyone to discover their family and deepen their sense of belonging that we all yearn for,” said Jen Allen, event director.

RootsTech London will not replace the annual conference in Salt Lake City but will serve as an additional event.

Registration Opens February 2019

Monday Mystery

Did you know that the Boeing company made furniture? Yes, the Boeing airplane company! According to Wikipedia:

When World War I ended in 1918, a large surplus of cheap, used military planes flooded the commercial airplane market, preventing aircraft companies from selling any new airplanes, driving many out of business. Others, including Boeing, started selling other products. Boeing built dressers, counters, and furniture, along with flat-bottom boats called Sea Sleds.

When I visited with the Chelan Valley Genealogy Society last week, my hosts for the night were Jon and Chris Courtright and they have this authenticated Boeing bed, dresser, nightstand and vanity set….. and I got to sleep in this bed!

The “mystery” is that the above teeny tidbit is The Only factoid I could find about this furniture (granted, I didn’t spend too long looking). Did you know that Boeing made furniture back in the day?????

What works, do you say? The WSGS system of Regional Reps!  Here is a page from the July-Aug Stillaguamish Star, newsletter of the Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society. On page 7 there is a nice write up, with color photos, of WSGS Region 1 Rep, Barbara Gorham Johnson presenting the certificates to SVGS’s nominated outstanding volunteer awards at the recent Clark County Genealogical Society conference……… where Roxanne Lowe presided over the ceremony announcing those awards. Since the “Stilly” folks were not present, Barbara Johnson traveled to them, with the certificates, and did the honors.  Good show, all around, I’d say!

Puget Sound Civil War Roundtable

September 13, 2018 Meeting

 

First meeting for this season will be at China Harbor (6:00 pm).
The speaker will be Kent Hickey, he will discuss the 1865-66 travels to Appomattox and throughout the South by young Northern journalist John Richard Dennett, whose essays first appeared in the Nation and were later collected in The South as It Is 1865-1866.  During part of his talk Mr. Hickey will portray the journalist Dennett in character, especially in reporting on the Freedmen.   Mr. Hickey will also tell what it is like to work in living history for the National Park Service, based on his volunteer service as a historical interpreter at Appomattox during summers.  For the rest of the year he is the President of Seattle Prep.

Friday Serendipity

Washington State has so much fascinating history! Perhaps not as much as Massachusetts, for example, but plenty enough to keep a history buff in reading for an entire lifetime.

Isn’t this sculpture fascinating? Here’s the story:

“Tillamook…… wind, much like animals, is thought and spoken of as a person in the Myth Times. There are winds from many directions, and they are associated with people of those specific directions.”

Spotted this in a Native American cultural exhibit at Fort Vancouver.
