Planning continues for further speakers in 2023 with the intention to have the presentations continue to occur on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. On May 10 Ryan Bennett will be presenting at the East Benton County Museum and Historical Society – 205 Keewaydin Dr, Kennewick, WA 99336 – on Using Facial Recognition on MyHeritage and Google. On June 14 Margie Belden will be presenting on Taking the Next Step in Your Genealogical Research – location to be announced. Please mark your calendar.
What a winter this has been! As many of you know on October 28th, 2022, we experienced an arson fire just behind our building. Thank goodness the fire department responded quickly and were able to get the fire knocked down. The building next door was not so lucky. If you happen to drive down Main Street in Sumner, you will see a big hole where the Stuck Junction Restaurant and Lounge used to be. We made it through with only smoke damage and have had the books cleaned and stored. The information we are receiving from the building owner indicates that it will be some time before we can get back into the building. They are working with the city of Sumner to make progress to re-open but are realistically looking to the end of the year. What does all this mean for Heritage Quest Research Library? We are working hard to move forward. The Management Team (daily processes) and the Board of Trustees have met and discussed several scenarios and options for that forward motion. We have viewed several different sites from Auburn to Orting to Puyallup and are finding available locations to be very few. However, the library crew and the teams are still engaged in the service we provide. Our classes are still being scheduled and attended by many of you. Our members have access to My Heritage and Ancestry from home. But we still need you. Your continued support of HQRL by logging into your account and accessing Ancestry and My Heritage helps us tremendously. Signing up for a class or two and taking the opportunity to give us feedback will help us in our quest to continue to be a premier genealogy resource. If you are not a member, now would be a great time to do so. If you are aware of a space that might fit our needs, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Anna gave the Board an impressive overview of the updates and new programs that will be available to us (such as a special memory lab) and she is excited to share the information with you.

I began this project for one reason—to pique my husband’s interest in my then new and consuming interest in genealogy—it worked. His father, long since deceased, was adopted. We had no information about his biological parents. This is a case study of how we moved from no information to standing in the church yard in England in which my husband’s 7th great grandfather was married in 1669. We’ll discuss how coupling available records with a simplified approach to Y- and at-DNA will head us in the right direction. As we all know, luck often precedes discovery; there are some strategies that increase the chances luck comes your way. We’ll go through some of those strategies that worked in this case study. I hope you’ll come on this journey with me and get to meet my husband’s grandmother—known in her lifetime as “that woman.”
Dr. Carol Gorman Friedel is a passionate amateur genetic genealogist. She’s been researching as well as attending lectures, classes, workshops, and courses since 2008 when she retired from practicing general dentistry. She is an administrator for two surname groups at Family Tree DNA (Gorman and Chatman). Carol belongs to several genealogical societies and is a member of the SKCGS Education Committee. She’s interested in learning more about this wonderful obsession we all share and in helping fellow genealogists as well as giving a hand to adoptees trying to find their biological parents.

The Eastern Washington Genealogical Society (EWGS) has a couple of special interest groups that should be of interest to a great number of people. These groups are for two icons of the genealogy world, Ancestry.com which obviously needs no introduction, and RootsMagic, a popular software program.
The Ancestry User Group meets on the 2nd Thursday of most months from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Pacific Time. It is a hybrid meeting; meaning you may attend in person or attend online, your choice.
The RootsMagic User Group meets the 3rd Monday of most months online via Zoom. Meeting time is 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm Pacific time.
You do not have to be a member of EWGS to attend these user groups. For more information and instructions for joining these interest groups, go to their website and as you scroll down you will see on the left a link to “Spec. Interest Groups”. Click that.
