Pam Vestal presents “How to Write Family Stories People Will Read”
Part of the thrill of genealogy is sharing our discoveries with those we love, so it can be disappointing when they have no interest in the subject. However, with good  research, thoughtful planning, and a dash of ingenuity, we can create engaging stories designed to entice even the most reluctant readers. Topics include how to breathe life into dry genealogical facts, choosing a compelling story structure, and presenting your writing in an appealing way. Creating a captivating story from our ancestors’ names, dates, and places is like turning fish eggs into caviar: the facts don’t change, but the way we describe them makes all the difference. 

Pam Vestal is a professional genealogist and speaker who turned her focus to her longtime love of genealogy after a 20-year writing career. Her articles have appeared in the National Genealogical Society Magazine and The Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly, and her lectures take her from coast to coast. Pam specializes in conducting genealogical research and then transforming that information into illustrated stories that even non-genealogists can enjoy.

Let’s Talk About: German Webinars & Databases

I’ve belonged to the German Genealogy Group for several years and have ALWAYS gleaned information from their monthly 14-page newsletter (comes via email). They specialize in “things German” and offer nearly 24,000,000 imaged records on their website. If you have German roots, you better check this out: www.GermanGenealogyGroup.com. Membership is $15 annually.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present German History For Genealogists on Wednesday, October 16th at 2:00ET. “Knowing the most important dates in German history can be helpful to your research.”  This webinar is free on the day it’s presented; thereafter it goes into their vast library which you can access for a $49 annual membership fee.  They have handouts too! The Sept-Oct 2024 issue of Family Tree Magazine features an article discussing the history of German civil registration, civil record formats, how to locate German civil records plus other tips. Many libraries carry this magazine or you can order a copy (or subscribe??) by clicking to Family Tree Magazine. 

My maternal grandmother was 100% German. I remember visiting her and being treated to smerkase (probably got that wrong) but it was a toasted piece of dark bread, spread with cottage cheese and topped with jam.  Mighty darn good, too, I do recall. 

And did you know that the U.S. Census Bureau confirms that as a people, we are fully 1/4 of German ancestry. Interesting. I am, are you???

This month our educational meetings resume on Tuesday October 8, at 6:00 pm in person at the Parkland/Spanaway Library and on Zoom at 6:15.

This month our educational program will be presented by Claudia C. Breland. Her presentation will be “Ancestry Pro Tools: Not Just for Professionals“.  Looking at an initial version of the handout this promises to be a very useful and informative program that you won’t want to miss. Claudia has been doing genealogical research since 1974 and has been a professional genealogist since 2008. She has written several books, her most recent a genealogy mystery titled “Home to Beulah” that she discussed with our book club during the April 20th meeting.

Our meetings are held monthly except for July and August starting at 6:00 PM, Zoom comes live about 6:15 PM.

Maureen’s Presentation: Anatomy of a Book, they are not all created equally

Maureen will be talking about her genealogical journey and research techniques. Starting with stories from her great grandmother and asking her Gram many questions about everything. She was especially interested in her great aunts and uncles and the on down generations and, of course, and the generations before them. She lived with Gram for four to five years, and near to her Gram’s adult ‘children’-still asking questions. After taking a mtDNA test, she learned of her French heritage and one of the ‘King’s Daughters’ a many times great grandmother.


Genealogy is the ‘book’ she continues to research, another generation, another chapter, and the search continues….

Bio: Maureen MacDonald lives on Whidbey Island and is currently an active member at SVGS in Arlington, Washington. She has spent the last 40 plus years researching genealogy and loving it.

There will be a short break with refreshments. The monthly meeting will follow.

DIG – DNA Special Interest Group

Also join us at the SVGS library from 1-3pm on Thursday, October 17th for our DNA Special Interest Group (DIG). This group works together to develop a better understanding of DNA techniques and strategies for finding relatives, discuss and review new DNA developments and tools and help members with their research problems. This group meets at the same time on the 3rd Thursday of the month.

All DNA skill levels are welcome to attend.

The Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society would like to help you preserve your family history. Bring your family documents, old photos, negatives, slides, tapes, and home movies to the SVGS Library to get them digitized absolutely FREE!

Bring your own USB drive for documents, photos, negatives and slides and a CD for tapes and movies. (There will be thumb drives and CDs available for purchase at the library.)

We will be open all month long on Tuesday, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm.

It takes longer to digitize tapes and movies, so we request an appointment to make sure the equipment is available when you arrive. Please email info@stillygen.org Attention: LeAnne.

Seattle Genealogical Society Open House

Join Seattle Genealogical Society (SGS) members as we celebrate Family History Month with a Fall Fling! We will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, October 12, from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM at our library location at the Good Shepherd Center in Seattle. All are welcome!  We will have volunteers on hand to assist with beginning genealogy questions as well as breaking down brick walls. Refreshments will be on hand, there will be coloring pages for kids and cookie decorating for all! SGS has access to several databases in our Library including Find My Past,American Ancestors, and more. SGS is also a FamilySearch Affiliate Library, if you have a record you would like to access. We have several computers onsite for quick lookups or bring your own device and access FamilySearch from our WIFI network.
