JEFFERSON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY May Meeting

JEFFERSON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

FOR RELEASE: May, 2018

Mental Health Issues in the 19th Century – Diagnosis and Treatment

Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS) has invited Janice Lovelace, PhD, psychologist and professional genealogist, to present a program “Mental Health Issues in the 19th Century – Diagnosis and Treatment” on Saturday, May 19, 9:30 am to 11:00 am, at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Rd, Chimacum. During family research, finding an ancestor in an asylum or enumerated in a census as imbecile or incompetent is not uncommon for we know that one person in ten has mental health issues. Did soldiers of that era suffer PTSD? Come learn about mental health and it’s treatment in the 1800s. Monthly meetings of JCGS are open to the public and are free of charge. Donations are appreciated. Visit our website <www.wajcgs.org>.

Janice Lovelace, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist with a specialization in child and family therapy and has been a private practice therapist as well as a faculty member teaching psychology. Janice is a member of Seattle Genealogical Society for a number of years and she joined the SGS Board as Vice President in 2014. She has 20 years of experience in family history research as well as academic work in the area. She is a member of Association of Professional Genealogists and National Genealogical Society.

Catherine and Gilbert Wooden Awarded 2017 Outstanding Volunteer Honors

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized over 500 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming weeks, you will be introduced to each of the 2017 award recipients and learn why they received the 2017 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Catherine Wooden

Gilbert Wooden

Today we’re introducing Catherine and Gilbert Wooden of Renton, Washington, who were nominated by the South King County Genealogical Society (SKCGS). This dedicated duo was recognized for their loyal service to the operation of their local society.

Cathy and Gil provide the crucial behind- the-scenes support every society depends on for smooth operation. Cathy always serves at registration tables, providing name tags, handouts or other items as needed. Gil has operated the audio equipment for meetings, transporting everything back and forth from home to venue. They both have served on the board of directors and various committees.

Cathy and Gil are respected and diligent members of the SKCGS, and richly deserve the honor of being Washington State Genealogical Society Outstanding Volunteers.

For more information on the WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award program, visit the Recognition page of the WSGS website or contact Roxanne Lowe, Interim Recognition Chair, at Roxanne@thekeeffes.com.

Wednesday’s Nostalgia

I love chomping into a fortune cookie and (as my family and friends well know) I believe in them absolutamentally. What’s not to believe about “Traveling at this time would be a good investment of time & money.”

Of course, I’m always waiting for a little slip stating: “When you leave this restaurant your car will have a flat tire.” Oops.

But here is the best fortune-cookie-fortune EVER:  “One generation opens the road which another genealogist travels.” Amen and for sure.

Tuesday’s Trivia

I DO NOT KNOW WHY
BUT MY TRIVIA PHOTO WON’T COOPERATE
AND APPEAR WHERE I TOLD IT TO!

NOR WOULD THE PHOTO I WANTED
TO ACCOMPANY THIS TRIVIA BIT

DANGNABBIT

Did you know that on May 6, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order creating the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was just one of the many Great Depression relief programs all designed to put unemployed American to work in return for temporary financial assistance.

If you live within driving distance of the TriCities,  Donna Potter Phillips will be presenting a program on the WPA to the Tri-City Genealogical Society on Wednesday, May 9th. Come on down!

Monday’s Mystery

As a city girl, this was a “mystery” to me. According to last Sunday’s edition of The Spokesman Review seven counties in Washington have more cows than people. Would that surprise YOU?

What was even more surprising to me was that I thought the taking of an agricultural census was a thing of yesterday but NOT SO. There is a 24-page form sent to Washington farmers periodically asking “how much acreage they farm, the animals and crops they raise, the sale value of products and their own demographics.” Interesting, no?

Rachel Alexander’s article concluded with “Spokane leads the state in llama population with 518. Don’t get spit on.”  Who would have guessed?

Tacoma-Pierce County Seminar Kicks Off

Roxanne Lowe and Mark Lowe are still looking for their family confluence — somewhere in the hills of North Carolina.

If Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society‘s kick-off Meet & Greet with J. Mark Lowe is any indication, the  main event on Saturday, April 28, 2018 is going to be a fun ride! At the Friday night event, Mark entertained the attendees while they dined on a scrumptious dessert buffet. What could be better than laughter and chocolate!

A good ol’ Southern boy from Tennessee, Mark is a born storyteller from a long line of storytellers. Every lesson he shared had a witty, entertaining story behind it — from driving sheep to Atlanta to the escapades of his pistol-packin’ grandma. For him, it’s all about the story, urging all of us to “tell your stories or they’ll die.”

You can register on-site for the Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society’s Spring Seminar  at the LaQuinta Inn, 1425 East 27th Street in Tacoma. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. with opening remarks by Cyndi Ingle at 9:00.

Friday Serendipity

Today a most different kind of serendipity……… good news for genealogical societies who have a “pet” cemetery they sponsor:

The newspaper bit read: “Historic cemeteries can now apply for grants for cemetery rehabilitation and preservation through the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. Cemeteries must be more than 50 years old, and the funding is for capital project that assist with improving and/or preserving the cemetery.”

For more info click to: dahp.wa.gov/historiccemeterygrant

Or call Julianne Patterson at 206-624-9449 for more information.
