We are off to a New Year and a change in leadership. It has been my honor to have served as your president for the past 6 years, but it is well past time for me to move on. Hopefully now I will have time to work on my own genealogy!
Kathy Sizer has been elected as your new President for 2022/2023. Please wish her well and offer any support you can. Especially now as she deals with the unexpected passing of her husband. My hope is that we can all continue to work on supporting each other as societies. We all have something to offer each other and our communities. Communication and support go a long way!
I wish to thank all of you who worked so hard over the past few years to keep WSGS viable and a continued presence in this ever-changing world we live in today. All Societies depend on our volunteers. WSGS is blessed to have some very dedicated ones. They kept us going when the going was tough. I am forever in your gratitude, amazed at your many talents and humbled by your dedication. To all of our members, thank you for continuing your support and financial contributions. You help us keep our presence in the genealogical community.

Saturday, January 15, 2022, 9:30am PT social time; 10:00am – 11:30am PT program SKCGS General Meeting (virtual) Dr. Leah Larkin presents “The Hicks Babies”
From the early 1950s to the mid-1960s, Dr. Thomas Hicks ran a community health clinic in McCaysville, Georgia. On the side, he mediated illegal adoptions, selling hundreds of newborns on the black market to couples who couldn’t have children of their own. These so-called “Hicks babies” have no paper trail to document their true parentage. DNA testing has allowed many of them to reunite with their biological families. Three case studies will demonstrate effective research strategies for unknown parentage searches using DNA.

TIP OF THE WEEK – SELECT, COPY, AND PASTE PAGES OF CENSUS DATA Here’s a nifty process to extract full page(s) of US Census Data from Ancestry (or FamilySearch) and paste it into Google Sheets to make a table of the data.
To copy the Census Data into Google Sheets you will be using the commands Select, Copy, and Paste Special – Values Only. Below I’ll describe the basic process using Ancestry and Google Sheets. If you prefer to use Excel instead of Google Sheets, you will use the commands Select, Copy, and Paste Special as text; nearly an identical process.
Step one is to search and find the US Census record you want to collect data from and use View Image to open the actual image. In Ancestry, located at the center bottom of your screen next to the image number, you will see an icon resembling a person. It’s called the “Index Button”. Click on it. Notice a transcription of the Census page is now displayed in the lower portion of the screen. Place your cursor anywhere in that area of the lower portion of your screen and click. Now you’ll use the shortcuts: Ctrl + A to select all data; data will now be highlighted Ctrl + C to copy all data you selected above Ctrl + Shift + V to paste special that copied data into Google Sheets Move forward or backward to the next Census record image, repeating the 3 command steps shown above , until you have copied all the data from the Census you want, and you have pasted that data into your Google Sheets table. Now you can filter and analysis the data you have collected.
