Topic: Heraldry in a Nutshell or Two: How a Coat of Arms came to be. What is heraldry and how does it relate to genealogy? Learn about the history of heraldry and what constitutes a Coat of Arms, its components and who can bear one.

Presenter: Gail Spangenberg-Parrish

A native of Pretoria, South Africa, Gail first learned of heraldry at the Bureau of Heraldry in Pretoria where she worked as an artist. Her knowledge of Coats of Arms was minimal but she soon learned and found the entire process fascinating. Gail has executed numerous Coats of Arms for various groups or private individuals both in the US and abroad. Some of her work is on display in South Africa, in both Western and Eastern Washington, California, Massachusetts, Washington DC, Germany and Thailand.

Chris Staudinger, operator of Pretty Gritty Tours in Tacoma, will tell the history of downtown Olympia’s bumpy beginnings, taking us down its streets and alleys and showing us cool things to do in downtown Olympia’s historic district. Family History Month

Now that we have your attention, did you know that October is Family History Month? Heritage Quest Research Library is here to assist you in the search for your own personal family history. Do you have a “Brick Wall”? Are you frustrated that you can’t access the records you need from home? We can help!
HQRL is Family Search affiliate library. While many of the Family History Centers for the LDS church are closed, we can access most of the records when you are in our facility. Our library collection includes many of the books you previously could find only in a FHL location.
If you are a member of HQRL you can access the Library edition of Ancestry and My Heritage from the security of your own home. Go to www.hqrl.com, click on the members page and log in to your account. You will find the link to both there.
We hope you will take this opportunity to spend some time with your ancestors. Learning from the past can help us as we head into the future.

RESEARCH BOOK CLUB
Come join the CCGS Research Book Club as we start a new book “The Genealogist’s Google Toolbox 3rd edition” by Lisa Louise Cooke. We meet on the first Monday of each month at Noon and will analyze this book one to two chapters at a time. For now, we are conducting our meetings virtually until we are able to meet in the library. If you’ve been keeping The Columbian, there is no need to keep them any longer. We’re “clipping” obituaries, death notices and vital statistics daily from their e-paper, so won’t need paper copies for 2020.

Clark County Genealogy on YouTube – Our content currently includes past classes and speakers that you might have missed. We are developing new content and hope to post regularly on topics such as “What’s that Library Resource?” “Memorable Family Stories”. “Spotlight on Focus Groups”.

ZOOM makes Face to Face meetings come together from remote locations via your cell phone, iPad or Computer. Presenting meetings virtually with Zoom will be an effective “social distancing” way for more members to enjoy our great CCGS programs.

ACCESS TO ANCESTRY LIBRARY EDITION FROM HOME
Hello, all. As everyone is surely aware, CCGS is closed up tight for the duration of the pandemic. But there is a ray of light peeking through. If you have a library card with Fort Vancouver Regional Library you can access the Library Edition of Ancestry from home in your bunny slippers. Click or copy and paste this link:

into your browser. That will take you to a page where there is a link to enter your library card number and password and be taken to the home page of Ancestry – Library Edition.

Don’t have a fvrl card?? The normal procedure is to present yourself with picture ID and proof of residence at a library. Not a possibility with the libraries all shut down, however, you can apply for an eCard. Go to

fvrl.org

and apply for the eCard. That will get you access to many digital and electronic fvrl assets.

Also, CCGS now has our own YouTube channel. Just go to YouTube.com and search for Clark County Genealogy and you will have the opportunity to subscribe and view three previously presented CCGS classes. More to come.
