Family History Month

Now that we have your attention, did you know that October is Family History Month?  Heritage Quest Research Library is here to assist you in the search for your own personal family history.  Do you have a “Brick Wall”?  Are you frustrated that you can’t access the records you need from home?  We can help!
     HQRL is Family Search affiliate library.  While many of the Family History Centers for the LDS church are closed, we can access most of the records when you are in our facility.  Our library collection includes many of the books you previously could find only in a FHL location.
     If you are a member of HQRL you can access the Library edition of Ancestry and My Heritage from the security of your own home.  Go to www.hqrl.com, click on the members page and log in to your account.  You will find the link to both there.
     We hope you will take this opportunity to spend some time with your ancestors. Learning from the past can help us as we head into the future.

  RESEARCH BOOK CLUB
Come join the CCGS Research Book Club as we start a new book “The Genealogist’s Google Toolbox 3rd edition” by Lisa Louise Cooke. We meet on the first Monday of each month at Noon and will analyze this book one to two chapters at a time. For now, we are conducting our meetings virtually until we are able to meet in the library. Focus groups are free and open to CCGS members and non-members. If you’ve been keeping The Columbian, there is no need to keep them any longer. We’re “clipping” obituaries, death notices and vital statistics daily from their e-paper, so won’t need paper copies for 2020.

Clark County Genealogy on YouTube – Our content currently includes past classes and speakers that you might have missed.  We are developing new content and hope to post regularly on topics such as “What’s that Library Resource?”  “Memorable Family Stories”. “Spotlight on Focus Groups”.  

ZOOM makes Face to Face meetings come together from remote locations via your cell phone, iPad or Computer.  Presenting meetings virtually with Zoom will be an effective “social distancing” way for more members to enjoy our great CCGS programs.  





ACCESS TO ANCESTRY LIBRARY EDITION FROM HOME
Hello, all. As everyone is surely aware, CCGS is closed up tight for the duration of the pandemic. But there is a ray of light peeking through. If you have a library card with Fort Vancouver Regional Library you can access the Library Edition of Ancestry from home in your bunny slippers. Click or copy and paste this link:

into your browser. That will take you to a page where there is a link to enter your library card number and password and be taken to the home page of Ancestry – Library Edition. 

Don’t have a fvrl card?? The normal procedure is to present yourself with picture ID and proof of residence at a library. Not a possibility with the libraries all shut down, however, you can apply for an eCard. Go to 

fvrl.org 

and apply for the eCard. That will get you access to many digital and electronic fvrl assets. 

Also, CCGS now has our own YouTube channel. Just go to YouTube.com and search for Clark County Genealogy and you will have the opportunity to subscribe and view three previously presented CCGS classes. More to come.

All others who provide access to the communication tools for CCGS, please edit, copy and deseminate where appropriate.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS  

If one could see a bright side to this trying year 2020, it would have to be that there are so many more online learning opportunities today. Look at the SGS Calendar of Events. Look at the items under Save the Dates – items from Auburn, Washington to Washington, DC to Oklahoma. Because of technology, no matter where you live, you can “attend” these events, near or far.

Olympia Genealogical Society October Meeting

In preparation for the holiday, we have asked OGS member Jerri McCoy to talk to us about “The Witches of Salem.” We of the twenty-first century are aware that witches do not fly across the sky on brooms, but in 1692 charity and mercy – and plain good sense – were all cast aside in persecution of suspected witches in colonial Massachusetts. The witch hunt would swell and burn through Salem Village and neighboring towns. How were witches identified? Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic we have tried to stay STRONG, but that hasn’t been easy.  We closed the library on Friday, March 13, 2020 right in the middle of the NOURISH OUR ROOTS campaign to replenish our reserves.  We are eternally grateful that you stepped up and helped us in that endeavor.  While we were able to move forward because of your generosity, we find ourselves again behind the 8-ball due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ZOOM makes Face to Face meetings come together from remote locations via your cell phone, iPad or Computer.  Presenting meetings virtually with Zoom will be an effective “social distancing” way for more members to enjoy our great CCGS programs.
