TIP OF THE WEEK – BRITISH COLUMBIA HISTORICAL NEWSPAPERS AND A WEBINAR Jill Morelli passed along this tip; it originally came from Valerie Beaudrault. The University of British Columbia has made the BC Historical Newspapers database, a digital collection of 168 newspaper titles published between 1859 and 1995, available on their website. Toward the bottom left hand side of the web page is an alphabetical selection list of the newspaper titles. And to the right of that list is a map that pinpoints the home of each publication. To explore a specific title, click on it in the alphabetical selection list toward the bottom of the page. But if you want to search the entire collection, that search box is located toward the top of the web page. Newspaper page images can be downloaded and saved. Here’s the link to the website: https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/bcnewspapers
If BC is an area of interest for you, check out the webinar “Genealogical Gold in British Columbia” with Dave Obee, Canadian genealogist, journalist, and author. It is scheduled for Friday, February 18, 2022 at 11:00 AM PST. This is one of many free webinars hosted by Legacy Family Tree. ROB SEXTON, VOLUNTEER OF WINTER QUARTER Each quarter, the Seattle Genealogical Society recognizes one member as our Volunteer of the Quarter. Our Volunteer for Winter 2022 Quarter is Rob Sexton.
Rob has been a member of SGS for over five years and he was our Director of Operations from 2018-2021.
Past SGS President, Jill Morelli, recalls she recruited Rob for the position of Operations Director over coffee at a national genealogical conference, by telling him the job consisted of a little vacuuming and emptying the waste baskets. “Two floods, one new HVAC unit, COVID, all new furniture, and a major move later – it all went well beyond vacuuming and emptying the trash!” she says.
“Rob has made the job of the next Operations Director easier and harder,” says Jill. “He brought everything up to date, but he also set a new standard. We all got spoiled by his attention – visible and invisible.”
Jill is not the only one singing his praises. Karen Knudson, SGS treasurer says, “Rob went above and beyond in his tenure as Director of Operations. He was thoughtful and helpful to me with his banking experience. He was always willing to answer questions and help in any way. And he was dependable. I also enjoyed his sense of humor!”
Cecellia Rogers, SGS Director of Education, says she was “awed by Rob’s patient, diplomatic, and systematic handling of acquiring the new digs and choreographing the move, from soup to nuts. Buy that man a cape! No one deserves the recognition more than he.”
In addition to SGS activities, Rob volunteers as a registrar for a local chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and serves on the Genealogy Committee of the National Society of SAR. When he’s not digging into family history research, he can be found digging in his garden.
Thank you so much, Rob, for your years of service to SGS. SIGN THE PETITION TO REOPEN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES RESEARCH ROOMS! SPREAD THE WORD! It’s been almost 2 years since NARA closed the research rooms due to COVID, and understandably so. There’s now a campaign and petition to get the archives reopened. Many feel 2 years is long enough and NARA can safely reopen with some safety precautions in place. You can help by contacting your senator and representative; let them know this is an issue you care about. Remember the old saying “The squeaky wheel gets the grease”. To sign the petition or learn more about the campaign, visit: https://www.change.org/p/incoming-archivist-of-the-united-states-reopen-national-archives-research-rooms SGS MEMBERSHIP MEETING SATURDAY, MARCH 12, 2022 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM ONLINE VIRTUAL SGS members please mark your calendars and plan to attend this membership meeting. The slate of officers for the 2022-2023 term will be presented. As always, check the Calendar of Events on the SGS website for the Zoom meeting id. NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR IRISH WEEK Volunteers are needed to help man the SGS Booth at Seattle Center’s Irish Week Festal that takes place on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13, 2022. Ideally there will be enough volunteers that each will cover a 2 hour shift. There will be books on Irish, Scots-Irish, & Scottish genealogy to help people with the basics. For the most part, people are interested in what clan they belong to and the origin of their surname. It’s simple and fun.
If you can help either day, please call or text Jean Roth at 206 295-6125.

DONE! The last major task in the restructuring of our library following our move to the Good Shepherd Center has been completed. Over 100 boxes of books, in storage and earmarked for shipment to the Internet Archives, needed to be unpacked, cataloged for our records, and then repacked into heavy duty shipping boxes. This took SGS members Allegra Anderson, Melanie Moser, Woods Fairbanks, and Ellen Peterson (pictured below), as well as Kathi, SGS Library Director, and Jim Secan, SGS President, two days. Later Kathi and Woods helped load the shipper’s truck, thus starting these books on the journey to their new home.
Many thanks from the SGS board to these four SGS members who quite literally volunteered to do the heavy lifting.

TIP OF THE WEEK – SELECT, COPY, AND PASTE PAGES OF CENSUS DATA Here’s a nifty process to extract full page(s) of US Census Data from Ancestry (or FamilySearch) and paste it into Google Sheets to make a table of the data.
To copy the Census Data into Google Sheets you will be using the commands Select, Copy, and Paste Special – Values Only. Below I’ll describe the basic process using Ancestry and Google Sheets. If you prefer to use Excel instead of Google Sheets, you will use the commands Select, Copy, and Paste Special as text; nearly an identical process.
Step one is to search and find the US Census record you want to collect data from and use View Image to open the actual image. In Ancestry, located at the center bottom of your screen next to the image number, you will see an icon resembling a person. It’s called the “Index Button”. Click on it. Notice a transcription of the Census page is now displayed in the lower portion of the screen. Place your cursor anywhere in that area of the lower portion of your screen and click. Now you’ll use the shortcuts: Ctrl + A to select all data; data will now be highlighted Ctrl + C to copy all data you selected above Ctrl + Shift + V to paste special that copied data into Google Sheets Move forward or backward to the next Census record image, repeating the 3 command steps shown above , until you have copied all the data from the Census you want, and you have pasted that data into your Google Sheets table. Now you can filter and analysis the data you have collected.
For more detail on filtering, table formatting, practical applications, and suggestions, take the time to watch one or two of these videos by Connie Knox of GenealogyTV :

We are looking for two to three volunteers to serve on the SGS Nominating Committee. This committee is responsible for finding volunteer candidates for the four officer positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary) and seven director positions (Education, Library, Membership, Operations, Publications, Technology, Volunteers) that make up the SGS Board of Directors to go on the slate for the upcoming SGS elections. Incumbents in six of these positions are planning to volunteer for another year, so over half of the positions already have one candidate. Our preference is to have SGS members who are not on the Board sit on the Nominating Committee, as called for in our Policies and Procedures Manual, but if we do not have volunteers for this committee by January 31, 2022 the Board will select two Board members to handle this job. If you are interested please contact either the SGS Secretary (Amandalei Bennett, secretary@seagensoc.org) or the SGS President (Jim Secan, president@seagensoc.org). ANOTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY There is one more task to complete our move to the new library space. We have approximately 100 book boxes filled with books in storage at the Public Storage facility located at 3000 15th Ave W, Seattle, WA 98115. These books need to be sent to the Internet Archive (IA) for scanning and posting on-line. First they need to be transferred to sturdier shipping boxes provided by the IA and we also need to keep a record of what we are shipping. We plan to record the items by either (a) taking a picture of the cover page of each book (cell-phone pictures are fine), or (b) keeping a written record of the title and author of each book. Volunteers to do this re-boxing and recording are needed immediately.
SGS Library Director, Kathi, will be coordinating this effort, so if you would like to help please contact her at library@seagensoc.org. REMINDERS The Irish and German SIGs are back and meeting today, Saturday, January 15th, at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, respectively.

TIP OF THE WEEK – 1950 U.S. CENSUS It’s almost here! The long awaited 1950 U.S. census will be released to the public in April 2022. FamilySearch expects it will happen on April 1st. This census will not be indexed when it is first released. The time it will take to index depends on how many volunteer for the job and how dedicated they are. The 1940 census consisted of roughly 132 million people and took 4 months to index. The 1950 census consists of approximately 150 million people.

FROM OUR SGS PRESIDENT
To the SGS Membership:
A major item of concern in our recent move was what to do with the items in our collection that we were not going to keep. Following guidance from our Bylaws, we gave the genealogy group at the Seattle Public Library (SPL) the right of first refusal on all remaining items in the collection. John LaMont of SPL estimates that they have taken around 450 linear feet (shelf space) of books and periodicals to SPL. The next group given the opportunity to obtain items from the collection was our membership, which was done via a two-day bargain-basement sale that saw roughly 1,000 additional items re-homed. Other local genealogical groups were given the opportunity to obtain materials, and a few of them took us up on our offer. We have also shipped several boxes of old school yearbooks to Ancestry.com, and will be shipping several boxes of old records (obits and the like) to FamilySearch to be scanned, digitized, and made part of their collection.
Finally, the majority of remaining non-periodical items (roughly 100 book boxes) are being placed in temporary storage to be donated to the OpenLibrary program of the Internet Archive (google Internet Archive for information). This organization scans and digitizes materials donated to them, and makes the material available on their website for anyone to use. This will open up that part of our collection to the entire world of genealogy.
So, while the physical size of the SGS collection has been significantly reduced, most of what we removed from the collection lives on elsewhere, and much of that will continue to be accessible by SGS members, either at the SPL main library or online.
Jim Secan President, Seattle Genealogical Society
