Eastside Genealogical Society March Meeting

The Eastside Genealogical Society will meet on Thursday, March 10, 2016 in the Bellevue Regional Library, Room 1, 1111 – 110th Ave NE, Bellevue 98004 at 7pm, with doors opening at 6:45 pm for networking.

Topic:  “For the Record: Writing Family Stories” by Claire Gebben   Have you ever wanted to record the family stories, but don’t know where to start? Have you written down some of your family history, but aren’t sure how to share it with others? Through exploration of formats, methods, and writing tips, this presentation will guide you through the process of getting those stories written down for posterity.

Claire Gebben is the author of The Last of the Blacksmiths, a novel set in the mid-19th century based on the true story of her German immigrant great-great grandfather. Ms. Gebben’s articles have appeared in Family Chronicle Magazine, Fiske Genealogical Foundation Newsletter, and her piece on historic Zoar Village will appear in the June/July issue of German Life magazine. She is the historian of the 160-year-old First United Methodist Church of Seattle, and holds an MFA in Creative Writing through the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts. http://clairegebben.com

The Eastside Genealogical Society will meet on Thursday, February 11, 2016 in the Bellevue Regional Library, Room 1, 1111 – 110th Ave NE, Bellevue 98004 at 7pm, with doors opening at 6:45 pm for networking.

Topic:  “HistoryLines.com – A Story for Every Ancestor”. User, Glen McNay, will show the features of this website, which allows you to create an interactive timeline, follow an ancestor’s migration history on an interactive map, explore the lifestyle of your ancestors and more. History Lines currently includes information from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, US, Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Poland, and Sweden, for 1600-1950.

Eastside Genealogical Society January Meeting

The Eastside Genealogical Society will meet on Thursday, January 14, 2016 in the Bellevue Regional Library, Room 1, 1111 – 110th Ave NE, Bellevue 98004 at 7pm, with doors opening at 6:30 pm for networking.

Topic:  Darcy Brixey, Bellevue librarian, will present “Genealogy Gems from your Public Library”.  Come learn about the latest sources of research help in the Library, updates to the genealogy databases and how to use World Cat to find those limited edition family books. She will also demo the KCLS catalog and options within Bibliocommons.

Visitors are always welcome at our meetings.

The Eastside Genealogical Society will meet on Thursday, October 8, 2015 in the LDS Bellevue South Stake Center, 15205 SE 28th St, Bellevue 98007 at 7pm, with doors opening at 6:30 pm for networking.

Topic:  Cyndi Howells, owner & developer of Cyndi’s List, (a comprehensive list of genealogical sites on the Internet), will address the topic of “Searching in the Deep Web”.  She will explore resources that are invisible to Google and hidden deep within websites and proprietary databases.

 

Anticipating a huge interest in this topic and our presenter, the location of this meeting will be changed to accommodate more attendees.  The location will be at the LDS Bellevue South Stake Center, which is located across 148th Ave from Bellevue College, behind the LDS Temple.  Parking is around the building and in the open lot between the temple and the fire station.

 

The new Seattle Family Discovery Center, a multimedia approach to sharing genealogy with all ages, is located in the same building & will be open at 6pm for a short walk-thru. Reservations for a full hour tour can be made online atfamilysearch.org/discoverycenter/seattle  .

Topic: What’s Happening on the Internet? Speaker: A panel of EGS Members About the Program: A panel of EGS members will discuss what’s happening on the Internet that genealogists might want to know about. This includes both new internet sites such as myheritage.com as well as new genealogical material on existing sites. This will be a highly interactive discussion with the audience. There are a lot of interesting things going on, with many new websites and databases. Acquisition of existing genealogy sites by Ancestry, for example, is a great discussion topic. How many of us realize that Ancestry’s family now includes AncestryDNA, Archives.com, Family Tree Maker, Find a Grave, Fold3, Genealogy.com, Genline, Heritage Makers, Newspapers.com, Progenealogists, Rootsweb, Shoebox, as well as 7 different Ancestry websites in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and United Kingdom? Kim Nichols Honored as Outstanding Volunteer in 2014

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized more than 400 outstanding volunteers, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2014 award recipients and learn why they received the 2014 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Today we’re introducing Kimberly A. Nichols of Snohomish, Washington, who was nominated by the Eastside Genealogical Society (EGS). She was recognized her leadership, knowledge, and volunteer efforts toward the goals and operation of the EGS.

Ms. Nichols has long served the EGS in the dual capacity of newsletter editor (since 2008) and webmaster (since 2007). In this capacity, she has been the face of the EGS to the genealogical world as well as being a consummate editor and communicator, notifying society members of current happenings and where and how to get involved. Ms. Nichols also served as EGS’s newsletter editor for much of the 1990s.

Ms. Nichols established one of EGS’s earliest special interest groups more than 20 years ago, and is in the process of establishing another.

From running EGS’s book and supply table to organizing outreach activities and teaching classes, Ms. Nichols has been an outstanding volunteer with special grace and a smile. She richly deserved being a recipient of a WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.
