GiveBig IS COMING SOON!

The Seattle Foundation’s GiveBig program is a one-day online charitable giving event involving nonprofit organizations in Seattle and King County.  This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. All donations made to SGS through the GiveBig website on May 3 will be increased by “stretch funds” meaning your gift to SGS will be supplemented by our ‘share’ of the stretch pool funds from the Seattle Foundation.  Last year that was 8.4%.

Membership dues pay less than a third of SGS’s operating expenses so charitable donations as well as our two yearly seminars are important income streams for SGS.  This event will enhance any gift you give to SGS and make your contribution go even farther!  So please save the date – May 3.

More specifics will be forthcoming as the date, May 3, nears. Watch for it and thank you!

SGS 1890 PROJECT CONTINUES

Thanks to several dedicated volunteers, progress continues on our project to “replace” the lost 1890 U.S. Census for Seattle.

Work has been completed on the 1889 WA Territorial Census and we hope to have it added to the SGS website and available to members soon. Phase 2, transcribing the 1890 Seattle City Directory, is about 85% complete.

We are looking for volunteers to help with Phase 3, which entails the final proofreading.  If you are interested in helping, please email the project lead, Kerri Keil, at sgs1890@gmail.com.

The guest speaker is Eastern European genealogy expert, Dave Obee.  Mr. Obee will explain how, with the help of new geographic tools and more records being placed online, it is now easier than ever to locate records in Eastern European countries like Poland and Ukraine.

If you missed the SGS Fall Seminar, everyone had a good time and it was a huge success thanks to all who volunteered, and thanks to the quality of the speaker, Dr. Tom Jones.  Heard repeatedly throughout the day was “How soon can we get him to come back?”.

If you are one of those who’d love to see Dr. Tom Jones again, check out the next item.  He will be in Oregon teaching a writing course at the Western Institute of Genealogy on the 28th and 29th of July.  He will also be at “The Summer Genealogy Fest” following the next day, July 30th, at the same location.

Societies and Organizations: The deadline for submission of your 2016 Outstanding Volunteer or Team is April 1. Here are the details:

  • Your society/organization can nominate up to 2 individuals and/or 1 team.
  • Nomination criteria is left up to the society – whoever you nominate is recognized by the WSGS as an Outstanding Volunteer.
  • Deadlines are:

o   April 1 – Send the name(s) to Roxanne Lowe at roxanne@thekeeffes.com; in turn, Roxanne will send the nomination form to the contact person.

o   May 1 — Submit the completed form and photo of the nominee(s)

o   May/June – Roxanne will draft the certificate & have the contact person approve it

o   June 18 – Awards will be presented at the conference in Tacoma. Certificates will be mailed to those not in attendance.

WE MUST PICK UP the books from their current home in North Portland on Wednesday, April 6th, at 10 a.m., bright and early!!

Delma McLean Named Outstanding Volunteer in 2015

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized more than 450 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2015 award recipients and learn why they received the 2015 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing Delma Roloff McLean, Yakima, Washington, who was nominated by the Yakima Valley Genealogical Society (YVGS). She was recognized for her dedicated volunteer efforts and positive attitude.

Delma McLean

Delma has been a member of the YVGS since 1987, along with her husband Frank. She has served as a librarian and held a board of directors’ position.  She is currently YVGS’s hospitality chair where she gives “hospitality” a whole new meaning with the smile and warm hugs that greet members as they attend meetings.  Delma has been a constant presence at the society’s events – from yard sales and the Indian John Hill Rest Stop fundraiser to seminars, workshops and monthly meetings.

Besides her participation at YVGS, she is also active with the International Society of Germans from Russia, was a board position for six years.

Delma is an outstanding volunteer and has given the YVGS 100 percent of herself. She richly deserved being a recipient of a 2015 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

It’s All Relative in Family Photos

Do you have photos of un-identified family members? Become a history sleuth, learn easy tricks to identify people, events, places and dates of photographs using fashion, photo processes, and online resources in this hands-on, interactive lecture, Saturday morning, April 16. Megan Friedel, Curator of Photography at History Colorado museum, originally the state historical society in Denver, will be presenting“Identifying Family Photographs” at the meeting of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS), at Chimacum’s Tri-Area Community Center, 10 W. Valley Rd..  The meeting is open to members of the public for a donation that helps pay for bringing future genealogy speakers to our area. At 9:30 A.M. over coffee or tea meet other ‘wanna-be history sleuths’ who are trying to identify their ancestors; 9:50 are announcements; and 10:00–11:30 is the lecture.

 

JCGS is delighted and excited to have Megan Friedel as our speaker. Megan has been managing History Colorado museum’s historical photography and moving image collections since 2013. Prior to moving to Colorado, she was the first photo archivist for the Massachusetts Historical Society, worked with the historical photography collections of the Oregon Historical Society and the University of Alaska Anchorage where she was Assistant Professor of Library Science and archivist for UAA’s Archives and Special Collections. Megan has been the curator of numerous exhibits and most recently in 2015, History Colorado’s award winning exhibit El Movimiento: The Chicano Movement into Colorado. She holds a B.A. from Amherst College, M.A. in History and an M.S. in Library and Information Sciences, both from Simmons College. She has a long association with Port Townsend where her parents reside.

Rose Janke Named Outstanding Volunteer in 2015

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized more than 450 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. Today we’re introducing Rose Albertson Janke of Kelso, Washington, who was nominated by the Lower Columbia Genealogical Society (LCGS). She was recognized for her leadership, knowledge and dedicated volunteer efforts.

As a long-time society supporter, Rose was one of the four original founders of LCGS in 1963. She was instrumental in writing the charter constitution and bylaws of the society and has served as secretary, publicity chairman and historian.

Rose has assisted in the genealogy section of the Longview Library, donated many of her personal books to the society’s genealogy collection, and written several articles for the Society’s quarterly newsletter “The Key.” Rose also helped form a research group that spent fifteen years restoring the records of the pioneer Catlin Cemetery. A compilation of the results is now housed at the Cowlitz County Public Works Department which oversees the cemetery’s maintenance.

Rose is a valued and hard-working member of the LCGS and richly deserved being a recipient of a 2015 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.
