All through the month of November, WAGS will offer anyone who has served in our Armed Forces a free Beginner How-to Packet and a one-on-one tutorial by one of their knowledgeable librarians to help get started. The library has several shelves full of locally-researched information on Civil War veterans and WWI veterans in our area, besides general books on the subject of wars through the centuries. The WAGS library is located at 127 South Mission (Museum Annex Building), Wenatchee. Hours are Tuesday and Saturday, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. For more information, visit the WAGS website.

A Trio of Travels at Wenatchee Area GS

wenatchee-gsThe November program at the Wenatchee Area Genealogical Society will be “A Trio of Travels,” featuring Dave and Louise Inchauspe. With a nod to Dr. Seuss, they’ll be off and away to great places in this talk. First you’ll get some history and research tips on the Basque people of the French/Spanish border, and their cultural contribution to the American West. Then Louise will talk about her German ancestry, and trace her line that came to Rosalia in 1908. Lastly, you’ll hear about trials and triumphs on her genealogical “journey” of working with Ancestry software to publish her family story.

Come to the Douglas County PUD Auditorium, 1151 Valley Mall Parkway, East Wenatchee at 2:00 p.m. for this fascinating presentation! For more information, visit the WAGS website.

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week

Seattle

TIP OF THE WEEK –
No Such Thing as a Free Lunch, but …

If you’re not familiar with the LDS annual Washington Family History Fair, it’s an entire day of free classes taught by qualified instructors.  The day consists of five one-hour sessions. You have several classes to choose from for each session. There are approximately 40 classes in all, plus an Exhibitor Gallery. Classes run the gamut from beginner to advanced. Registration, classes, and parking are all free!  Sounds almost too good to be true, but I attended last year and was impressed.

Pre-registration is encouraged and available on-line. If you want a printed syllabus or a boxed lunch, those are available for a nominal fee and you order those during pre-registration. Classes are on a first come, first served basis. Pre-registering will help them plan for the size of the room they need for each class as well as the number of syllabuses to print.

Our new SGS President, Jill Morelli,  and SGS members, Jean Roth, Mary Kircher Roddy, and Steve Morrison will be presenting.  Refer to the “Agenda and Schedule” on the website to check out the class descriptions and/or information on any of the numerous instructors.

This year the Family History Fair 2016 is at the Bellevue South Stake Center, behind the temple at 15205 SE 28th Street, Bellevue, WA 98007, on Saturday, November 12, from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm.  Doors open at 8:00 am for check-in or day-of-event registration.

The Seattle Genealogical Society Board is happy to announce that Jill Morelli has agreed to assume the role of President of the Society for the remainder of the 2016-2017 year. You may know Jill from her role as Publications Director of the Society from 2012 to 2015, as well as the many programs she has been involved with and the numerous presentations she has given to the Society. She has devoted the interim time to writing her portfolio for certification as a certified genealogist which has only recently been submitted for review. While the outcome is yet unknown, she is now free to devote her time to the Society and the needs of the membership. The position has been vacant since the election last spring. Please welcome Jill.

Kathryn Bowman

Today we’re introducing Kathryn Bowman of Everett, Washington, who was nominated by the Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society (SVGS). She was recognized for her active participation in the 2016 Northwest Genealogy Conference in Arlington.

Ms. Bowman was the Assistant Conference Chair for 2016 and was responsible for the continued success of the conference. She coordinated all activity with the team members and led the marketing and material design teams. In addition, she is the SVGS newsletter editor and a valued member of The Tombstone Committee.

It is because of Ms. Bowman’s dedication and leadership skills that the Northwest Genealogy Conference enjoys continued success. There is no doubt, she richly deserved being a recipient of a 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

For more information on the WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award program, visit the Recognition page of the WSGS website or contact Roxanne Lowe, Recognition Chair, at Roxanne@thekeeffes.com.

Objectives of the Study:
The research objective of this study is to gain new understanding into the perspective of genealogists as a user group of archives. Genealogists are major clientele of archives in order to do their own historical and family history research. This research seeks to explore the information needs of and experiences of genealogists in archives. These areas will be explored in an effort to examine the relationship between archives and genealogists and to bring new awareness to the archival community from a genealogical perspective.

Subject Characteristics:
I would like participation in this study from those who conduct genealogical and family history research, personally and professionally, and/or identify as a genealogist. Additionally, participants must have used or visited archives in their genealogical research. I seek participants who have a range of experience and skill sets in genealogical research.

Participates will participate in a survey questionnaire. The survey is 28 questions long and includes both multiple choice and open-ended questions. The survey will take approximately 20-40 minutes to complete.
