Dear Friends of Washington State Genealogical Society,
The NGS Delegate Council Virtual Kickoff Workshop is the first opportunity for NGS member organization delegates to work and learn together. The workshop is an opportunity to collaborate with peers from other genealogy organizations and learn more about the role of a delegate.
Scheduled for 17 May 2021, it is one of several new components of our week long virtual NGS 2021 Family History Conference focused on genealogy organizations.
Each NGS member organization is invited to “send” its delegate to the workshop which will be held entirely online. There is no fee to register. Delegates will receive their invitations soon.
The Virtual Kickoff Workshop is a time to learn about the Delegate Council–the new advisory body for genealogical organizations that are members of NGS. The Delegate Council provides a unique perspective and guidance to the NGS Board of Directors on genealogy and family history matters, and how NGS can best serve genealogy and family history organizations.
It’s also time to get to work! Delegates will share ideas and thoughts on genealogy organization management while charting a course for how the Council will work together.
The workshop will: Provide information about the structure and function of the Delegate Council Facilitate understanding of Delegate Council member roles Prepare members for effective collaboration on the Delegate Council. If you are unsure of your organization’s NGS membership status or its assigned delegate, please contact membership@ngsgenealogy.org.
NGS will record some portions of the workshop and make them available to member organizations on its website.

Jacqui Porter message above describes this month’s topic (Documenting and Sharing Family Histories with Stories and Photos) and provides a link to pre-register. This month’s meeting is a webinar rather than a normal zoom meeting. That means that the presenter sets up the meeting using their account and controls access to the presentation, thus you need to pre-register. Once you pre-register you will receive an email with a link to the presentation. Use that link like you have for our previous meetings and enjoy the presentation. I have been asked to present on the effects of the Pandemic on genealogical societies. I have developed a 19 question survey for members of all societies to gather ideas of before/after/future Pandemic impacts. If you are willing, I would love to have your observations.
Here’s the deal. Any society that is used as the focus society will be offered the written report and an opportunity to have the presentation given to the audience of their choice, virtually, one time.
SGS MEMBERSHIP MEETING SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 2021 AT 12:00 PM VIRTUAL SGS Members, don’t miss this important SGS Membership Meeting. Recruiting efforts and candidates for the Board of Director positions will be discussed. Additionally, there are two major interconnected projects underway we will be talking about.
First, we are working to reduce the physical size of our library, part of which is a plan to move large parts of it online to facilitate access by SGS members and the genealogy community at large.
Second, as mentioned at earlier meetings, our lease runs out this year and we have been looking for a new location.
We will be providing information about both of these topics and asking for feedback from the membership.
LEVEL I – GENEALOGY BASICS & BEYOND Registration is now open for the next series of “Level I – Genealogy Basics & Beyond” with Valerie Lair. This small-group course includes seven 2-hour sessions, meeting weekly online. It covers how to successfully conduct research in census records, vital records, newspapers, city directories, churches, cemeteries, military records; using major online resources along with libraries and archives; and so much more. The course will challenge you in perfecting your genealogy skills.
The next series is scheduled to meet online March 9 – April 27, 2021, Tuesday evenings at 6:00 pm PT (8:00 pm CT). It is limited to five registrants.

Registration for the NGS 2021 Family History Conference opened 1 February 2021 at 1:00 p.m. (EST). Plans for our forty-third annual conference include a full week of virtual events* for individuals, societies, and organizations 17-21 May 2021.
Monday, 17 May, begins the week with a Kickoff Workshop for the NGS Delegate Council, the new advisory committee for member organizations including yours. This inaugural workshop will focus on helping delegates understand their role within NGS. Please make sure the name of Eastern Washington Genealogical Society’s delegate is on file with NGS.
Tuesday, 18 May, presents the debut of the SLAM! Idea Showcase, which highlights creative and innovative projects or programs by societies, libraries, archives, and museums (SLAMs). The day will also include presentations that assist librarians and others who serve genealogists.
In the coming days, we’ll be sending you a “call for proposals” for the SLAM! Idea Showcase.
On Wednesday and Thursday, 19‒20 May, our premier two-day virtual conference event―NGS 2021 Live! ―features award-winning authors Dani Shapiro and Ric Murphy; an opening session by esteemed genealogist and Virginia expert Barbara Vines Little; and presentations by nationally recognized speakers including Elizabeth Shown Mills, Thomas W. Jones, Judy Russell, Eric Grundset, Craig Scott, Janice Lovelace, and more. Two full days are planned by NGS to offer exciting new ideas to energize family historians’ research, announce the winners of NGS awards, and offer a unique experience―the camaraderie of thousands of fellow genealogists from throughout the United States and the world. Program content will include bonus lectures provided by conference sponsors and sponsoring organizations.
The week ends with Focus on Societies on Friday, 21 May. This all-day event is devoted to presentations offering expert advice for genealogy society leaders—on managing and growing your genealogical or historical society. The day will feature fourteen session topics including Jill Morelli’s kickoff with ideas and opportunities based on lessons learned during the pandemic, and the Society Shoutout.

In addition to NGS Live!, we will offer a choice of either a twenty or forty lecture package on-demand. Those who purchase a package may choose from more than eighty-five on-demand sessions available for viewing starting in June. Other programs will be priced separately. Throughout the week a virtual Expo Hall will be available.

*Note: Due to ongoing mandates in Virginia in regards to COVID-19 and our concern for the well-being of our attendees, exhibitors, volunteers, and staff, NGS will no longer be able to host an in-person conference in Richmond, Virginia in May 2021.
