Let’s Talk About: Names, Yesterday & Today

Picking a name for baby has always been a delightful challenge. Surely it has always been so. I have a family of four siblings born in the early 1700s in Connecticut named John, Mary, Elizabeth…………… and Bazeleel.  Bazeleel? Yep, a Bible name for sure.

We might think that names for baby popping up today are kinda crazy but it was the same decades or centuries ago (as proved by the above example, no?).

Doing some “pay-it-forward” work for the St. Clair County Genealogical Society in Illinois (where some of my ancestors hail from), and helping index and proofread early birth records, I’ve come upon these names…. and they are first names:

Orben, Noal, Truthadoris, Honey, Ermil, Calliem, Argana, Bornodna, Yarlotts, Falenda, Mortha and Ceeylia.

How long ago were these names, you ask? 1916! 

I’m quite sure that a list compiled in 2122 of some of today’s names might sound just as “interesting.” Agree?

Tri-City Genealogical Society Richland Family History Center Now Open!!!

TCGS Members and Guests:

After being shut down for two years due to COVID, opened on a limited schedule for a few months, and then totally closed for renovations, the Richland Family History Center is now open!!!

Not only are we in a new location, but we also have a new phone number and a new schedule.  

The entry to the new location is on the south side of the building, facing Dairy Queen, at the end of the delivery ramp.

The new phone number is 509-241-8310.

The news hours are:  

Tuesday  10 am – 4 pm and 6 – 9 pm

Wednesday  6 – 9 pm

Thursday 10 am – 4 pm 

Friday  10 am -1 pm

Additional hours may be added as becomes necessary.

The general meeting will be held on September 14th at 7 pm.  The program will include a short overview of the Benton County Historical Society and Museum by Ryan Bennett and Southern Land Records by Veronica Anguiano.

Dan will be sending out the Zoom link next week.

We are excited to invite you to an open house for the newly renovated Richland Family History Center. The dates are tentatively set for October 12th and 13th. More information will be coming soon.

Based on the respondents to my last questionnaire, some people are excited to start meeting in person. The opportunity to meet in person or in a hybrid (a combination of both in-person and Zoom) meeting will be coming soon.  We are trying to find a suitable, safe location.

It’s not too late to respond to my previous questionnaire.  

The responses I have received show me you are still interested in genealogy and family research and even meeting in person but the TCGS Board can only do so much by itself.  We need your input and your help!

Please let me know what kinds of programs you are interested in, who your favorite speakers are, or better yet if you would be willing to present a program. 

As I was reminded the other night, everyone has something they can share ~ friendship.

New Banner Photos Wanted

Have you noticed the Blog banner changes every time you visit? The photos are submitted by readers like you — and Donna Potter Phillips of Spokane (& weekly contributor to the Blog). We’re always looking for scenic photos of our beautiful state for the rotating photo gallery on the blog banner.

Guidelines for the photos are few:
•Landscapes, landmarks, and scenery photos are preferred. If, however, you have a perfect photo that includes people, please obtain their permission to post the photo.
•Photo must have been taken in Washington State (this is the Washington State Genealogical Society blog, after all!).
•Photo will be cropped to 1100 x 250 pixels, so keep that in mind. If in doubt, send it to us & we’ll figure it out.
•You may submit as many photos as you want.
•Final decisions on suitable photos will be made by the awesome WSGS Blog Team.
•There’s no prize if your photo is chosen – just the satisfaction that your photo is being showcased on a blog viewed by hundreds of enthusiastic genealogists.
•There’s no firm deadline to submit photos, just keep ‘em coming. We want to rotate lots of photos to keep the blog fresh.

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week National Nordic Museum

TIP OF THE WEEK –
the NATIONAL NORDIC MUSEUM for FREE!
 

The Nordic Heritage Museum was founded in 1979 and in 1980 it occupied a leased space in the old Daniel Webster Elementary School building in Ballard. By May 2018 the museum had expanded, built and moved into a new 57,000 sqft building on NW Market St, and was  renamed the Nordic Museum. In 2019, by an act of the US Congress, the museum was designated the National Nordic Museum. If you haven’t seen the new museum, Thursday would be your chance to see it for free. It is one of many Seattle area museums that offer free entry on the first Thursday of each month.  

Here’s a list of history, culture, and heritage themed museums that participate in the free entry on the first Thursday of the month program: 

  • Burke Museum of Natural History & Culture – UW – 10 am – 8 pm 
  • MOHAI – South Lake Union – 5 pm – 8 pm 
  • National Nordic Museum – Ballard – 10 am – 5 pm 
  • NW African American Museum – SE Seattle – 11 am – 7 pm 

And these two museums are always free:

  • Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park – Pioneer Square –  10 am – 5 pm

PLEXIGLAS SNEEZE GUARDS
ACHOO, ACHOO!

We still have these sneeze guards and would like to find them a new home. Know anyone in need of them? Ask around, please. 

Just after we closed our SGS library due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions we obtained funding from the Federal Government through a Seattle 4Culture grant to purchase items we would need to reopen the library when it was deemed safe to do so. We used a large part of the grant funds to purchase one-quarter-inch clear Plexiglass ‘sneeze guards’ to use throughout the library in order to provide safe working conditions for our volunteers and patrons. While we still use a few of the sneeze guards, we would like to re-home what we no longer need. The sneeze guards range in size from about 2′ to 2.5′ by 6′. We also have a couple of larger odd-shaped guards. All have ‘feet’ running along one or more edges to help keep them upright.

Clark County Genealogical Society Celebrates 50th Anniversary

It is hard to give myself credit, but I worked with The Columbian to tweak their interest. One never knows what a paper will do, and we were soooo lucky!
