Flappers, jazz, bootleggers, bathtub gin. The roaring 1920s was a decade of decadence and prosperity following a pandemic and world war.
 

Join us on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 1:00 PM PST for an online presentation via Zoom from Dr. Bill Woodward, emeritus professor of history, at Seattle Pacific University, where we will explore what lessons from the 1920s can we apply to our own looming 20s.

Remarkable parallels chart between the 2020s and developments from a century ago: shattered idealism, social clashes, domestic terrorism, culture wars, disorienting technologies, and fearsome disease. How might stories from a particular moment in the past shed light on ways for us to move forward or broaden our context of when our ancestors lived 100 years ago? As the 2020s unfold, what conversations should we have?

William Woodward is an award-winning professor of American and Pacific Northwest history at Seattle Pacific University. His teaching, research, and writing focus on iconic elements of regional and national culture, including the military and baseball. His co-authored pictorial history of the Washington National Guard was released in 2019. Woodward lives in Seattle. Check the Calendar of Events for upcoming program meetings from SGS.

Evergreen Cemetery Team Named One of 2022’s Outstanding Teams

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized over 600 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2022 award recipients and learn why they received the 2022 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing the Evergreen Cemetery Team that was nominated by the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society (NeWGS). The team was comprised of Lora Rose, Jayne Evans, and Jim Witham.

NeWGS’s Evergreen Cemetery Team

This amazing team of volunteers has worked diligently to make the area’s pioneer Evergreen Cemetery a thing of beauty while honoring those interred there. They have done everything from clearing brush, picking up pinecones, mowing and weed whacking, repairing damaged stones, and repairing fence. Lora Rose, the team leader, has also spent hours researching each and every burial, posting information to the NeWGS online Evergreen database and responding to inquiries concerning the inhabitants.  Everything accomplished at the cemetery over the past several years is because of this dedicated team and they make NeWGS very appreciative and very proud.

Fort Walla Walla Camp 3 of The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War Meeting

Our open to the public meeting will be Jan 28, 2023 at 12:30 at VFW Post 1435  at  212   S. David St.   Spokane Valley. Program speaker at 1:00 pm is Rudy Lopez director of the E. Washington Veterans Cemetery on interments, eligibility and research process. Some human interest stories will be shared. Also John Davis on how numerous CW veterans, became family related with in their units. Other business after the program.   Fuller details at www.suvpnw.org under events of FWW Camp 3.

Let’s Talk About …… New for 2023

Please read clear to the end for my Big Announcement!

I knew that my maternal grandmother, Clara Ann Joseph, was born on 14 Nov 1894 in the Mississippi River town of Ivy Landing, Illinois. By 1900, the Joseph family was living several miles inland which gives a big clue as to way I could never find Ivy Landing on any map. It must have surely washed away! In those early days, men’s attempts to control the Mighty Mississippi were puny at best. It was well into the 1890s that the Corps of Engineers began building dams to (hopefully) better control the river.

In late October 2022 I tool a cruise down the entire length of the Mississippi River. I was very surprised to see miles and miles and miles of river bank looking much like the picture above. Was this where Ivy Landing was? I’ll never know for sure but I’ll bet it was a tiny town back in the trees along a stretch of river bank just like this.

Now for my big announcement:  On this recent cruise, I kept my eyes and ears open to learn everything I could about the Mississippi River and the history of states along the river, the Heartland of America. Polling several genealogy friends, and getting their thumbs up, for the foreseeable future I will be sharing much of what I learned about America’s history. One highlight was that I got to visit Graceland and see Elvis!! Stay tuned………………. Come learn some U.S. history with me!
