Michelle Leonard is a professional genealogist, DNA Detective, freelance researcher, speaker, author and historian. She has extensive experience both in the traditional and genetic genealogy spheres and runs her own genealogy and DNA consultancy business, Genes & Genealogy.
The Clallam County Speaker’s Series will host Sara Cochran, November 11th, starting at 10:00. There is no cost to watch the presentation. .
Her topic will be Shaky Leaf Syndrome: Using Website Generated Hints More Effectively. Indexing, optical character recognition, and computer algorithms make finding obscure records about our families easier than ever! Unfortunately, computers can’t distinguish between people of the same name who lived in different places or at different times. Using real examples, Sara will evaluate hints and attach the keepers to our trees.
Sara is a wonderful speaker, returning by request. She has a certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University and a degree in Library Science. She writes a blog, The Skeleton Whisperer, and specializes in Irish research, methodology, completing applications for USDAR, USD1812, and DUVCW, et al.

Saturday, October 7h – General Meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m. Following the Business Meeting, Barbee Buchanan will give a presentation on “Works Progress Administration (WPA)”. During the Depression, WPA employed most of the unemployed people on relief until the economy recovered. WPA employees-built bridges, roads, public buildings, public parks and airports. Barbee will be giving a talk on the projects that were of a genealogical nature. These ranged from collecting oral histories to inventories of county records to compiling large collections of cemetery records.

Mary Kircher Roddy, CG, earned a certificate in Genealogy and Family History at the University of Washington in 2005. She was accredited by the Board for Certification of Genealogists in 2019. She is a trustee of the Board for Certification of Genealogists and is a former treasurer for the Association of Professional Genealogists. She is a co-editor of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly and one of the founders of the Applied Genealogy Institute.

Saturday, October 21, 2023, 9:30am PT social time; 10:00am – 11:30am PT program SKCGS General Membership Meeting (online) Peggy Clemens Lauritzen presents “How Using the Genealogical Proof Standard Uncovered a Family Story” One of the elements of the Genealogical Proof Standard is analyzing your information and documentation and correlating it with other known facts. Does the research trail end when you can’t find the family? This is an advanced-level class presenting a case study that was used in a First Families of Ohio application. It particularly drills deeper into census research when an ancestor was supposedly missed. By correlating the missing information with known information of the time period, a new family story emerges.
Peggy Clemens Lauritzen, AG, FOGS, was involved in genealogy before she was even born. The daughter of avid genealogists, she was spending time in courthouses and cemeteries while other children were playing on swings and going to the beach. The love of her family’s history has never left her. With her experience serving as a former and current Family History Director, she frequently speaks at genealogical societies, workshops, seminars, and webinars where she loves bringing genealogy to life. Some of those would include The Ohio Genealogical Society, The Ohio State University, Brigham Young University, and many other state and local genealogy societies. She has recently completed several Legacy QuickGuides on Appalachia and is a well-known webinar presenter. In 2018, she was awarded the title of Fellow of the Ohio Genealogical Society and received the Laura G. Prescott Award for Exemplary Service in Genealogy. Peggy is an instructor at Ancestry Academy, Family Tree University, a columnist for Reminisce magazine, and a former researcher for Ancestry ProGenealogists.
