Time to expand your research in FamilySearch.org?  You’ve processed all those handy Record Hints for your ancestor, so now what?  FamilySearch has a vast amount of records that are only available with a deeper dive.  Come learn some tips and tricks that will make your dive more effective and less frustrating.

Bio: Donna Snider is Director of the Camano-Stanwood FamilySearch Center on nearby Camano Island. Her life-long love of family history propelled her through many hours of recording memories for the elderly, through several college genealogy classes, and through a B.A. in gerontology at Brigham Young University. She has taught a variety of genealogical classes over the last several decades, and her specialty is teaching others how to easily steer through the extensive FamilySearch.org program.

There will be a short break with refreshments. The monthly meeting will follow.

Also join us at the SVGS library from 1-3pm on Thursday, February 15th for our DNA Special Interest Group (DIG). This group works together to develop a better understanding of DNA techniques and strategies for finding relatives, discuss and review new DNA developments and tools and help members with their research problems. This group meets at the same time on the 3^rd Thursday of the month.

Bio:

Mary Kircher Roddy, CG, earned a certificate in Genealogy and Family History at the University of Washington in 2005. She was accredited by the Board for Certification of Genealogists in 2019. She is a trustee of the Board for Certification of Genealogists and is a former treasurer for the Association of Professional Genealogists. She is a co-editor of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly and one of the founders of the Applied Genealogy Institute.

October is Family History Month!

SVGS will be celebrating Family History Month all month long in October.

Every Saturday we invite you to stop by our library. Meet the librarians, have some refreshments and enter the weekly drawing and the grand prize drawing. (1 year membership to the Ancestry World Addition)

Every Saturday will have a different theme.

Saturday, October 7^th – Introduction to the Library

Come for a tour, see what the library has to offer. Even if you’re a regular user of the library we are always adding to our resources. There’s always something new to discover!

Saturday, October 14^th – Preserving Your Family History

Bring 10 photos, a thumb drive and use our fast photo scanner to digitize your family memories. If you don’t have USB drive, you may buy one at the library for $5. We will provide instructions for those who need some help. If you have a large collection to digitize you can always come back at later date.

Saturday, October 21^st – Sharing Family History with Your Children

Bring your children or grandchildren and help them complete a basic family tree.

Suggested questions to answer will be provided.

Saturday, October 28^th – SVGS Online Resources

Learn what online resources are available on our computer workstations in the Media Room. Also, a review of the resources available on our website.

If you are unable to stop by on a Saturday, come by on Tuesday or Thursday for a tour and put in an entry for our grand prize drawing on the 28^th. (A year membership to Ancestry World Explorer)

Maureen will describe how she used town records to prove which of two men with the same name was her ancestor. She will also demonstrate how to locate town records.

Bio:

Maureen has been interested in genealogy since hearing the family stories as a child. She is a member of the Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society and the Genealogical Society of South Whidbey Island where she was a Director at Large in 2021-2022. She is a descendant of five different Mayflower families and has spent years researching New England records.

Patriot and Loyalist ancestors. (This group normally meets the first Tuesday of the month at 10 am) Then stay for the potluck!

Archaeology, Genealogy and A Privy

Bio:
Meghan Caves has nearly completed her Master’s Degree in anthropology and is pursuing her Doctorate in historical archaeology at the University of Idaho. She has worked as an archaeologist in the Pacific Northwest since 2018 and is currently an archaeological technician at the Umatilla National Forest out of the Pomeroy Ranger District in Southeastern Washington.

Meghan’s topic: Archaeology, Genealogy and A Privy

Meghan’s thesis research weaves together multiple stories of indigenous and Euro-American families who surrounded and interacted with an archaeological deposit originally excavated and analyzed in 2008 from Arlington, Washington. Meghan’s reanalysis of the archaeological assemblage employs a biographical approach, which looks at how the ‘lifetimes’ of artifacts discarded in the “privy” are connected to the lives of the Teager, Hurd, Lovelace, and Weimer families who owned and occupied the site between 1890 and 1940. In order to construct nuanced and compelling biographies of the site, she employed extensive archival and genealogical research with the help of the Stillaquamish Valley Genealogical Society in 2021. Her talk will discuss how genealogical methods were used in her research, how this kind of historical information is more broadly useful to archaeologists, and explore the ethical implications of using publicly available genealogical information for archaeological research.
