Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week

TIP OF THE WEEK – A WONDERFUL SPOOF OF THE “WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?” TELEVISION SERIES

Who Do They Think They Are? is a hilarious Aussie spoof of Who Do You Think You Are?, the television program sponsored by and prominently featuring Ancestry.com.  Created by The Checkout, an Australian television program, it’s less than 6 minutes long, and will be appreciated by anyone familiar with the American version, whether fan or foe of this series.
It satirizes the Who Do You Think You Are? series, Ancestry.com, DNA testing, and trying to find genealogy information only on the Internet.
It also delivers a serious message about the proper methods of searching one’s family tree.

Tip of the Week

TIP OF THE WEEK:
Pennsylvania Probate Records, 1683-1994

By now, everyone should be familiar with the ever-increasing databases available online at Familysearch.org.  However, many people limit their searching to INDEXED records, and thus never discover the many “image only” unindexed historical records that are available on this site.
One such database is Pennsylvania Probate Records, 1683-1994, found at:https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1999196
This database has over 3.2 MILLION images of wills and other probate records in it.
It takes some gumption to click on the BROWSE button with that many records, but don’t despair!  The images are arranged first by county, and then by the will books, in chronological order.  Nearly all of them have indexes at either the start or the end, making it possible to search for and locate a specific document without too much effort, just as one used to do in the “old days” with microfilms.
Using this site recently, I was able to find and download three pre-1850 wills in one sitting, without leaving home.
If you have Pennsylvania ancestors and want to check for probate records, check out this database.

Seattle Genealogical Society Updates

NEW WEB SITES ON SGS LIBRARY COMPUTERS

You are invited to check out the three excellent genealogical web sites we have recently added to our SGS Library Computers.
We now have Fold3, Newspapers.com, and the Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International among other sites already available to assist researchers in our library.
Fold3 has become the place to go for US military records, including pension files from the Revolutionary War, some from the War of 1812, Civil War service records, Navy cruise books, collections of casualty lists from recent conflicts, and much more. Newspapers.com is a massive collection of papers, some going back to the 1700’s, from locales throughout the USA, with a smaller number from England, Ireland and Canada.
The Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International website gives access to the Member’s homepage. This in turn allows research of the Archdiocese of St. Paul MN church records, Leo Baca’s Czech Immigration Passenger List and a number of other valuable resources.
We hope to add more genealogical sites in the near future. Your library is growing. Please come and enjoy it!

The second part of the program is a little-known and chillingly unique  story of the“The Ahnenerbe – the Nazi Genealogy Ancestral Heritage Program.” Its Family History records can go back into the 1700’s and it has affected German genealogy research for decades both in a negative and positive way. It inspired Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones” movies with the Quest for the Ark of the Covenant and the Search for the Holy Grail.  Speaker: Jean A. Roth

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER,  Judith Eccles Wight, AG  from Salt Lake City.

She writes extensively for genealogical periodicals including Irish Roots and is a popular teacher and lecturer at genealogical events and Legacy Family Tree webinars. She worked 10 ½ years as a British Reference Consultant at the Family History Library. She and her husband recently completed a 15 month LDS Church mission at the Church History Library where her research skills were put to work in documenting people.
Program: “My Delia Holland isn’t WHO and WHERE She’s supposed to Be.”
This is based on a case study that Judith did on a woman she researched; her name and place of origin were identified in U.S. records and through family records and stories. There was only one problem – she couldn’t be found in Ireland. Judith will give tips for solving both Irish personal name and place name problems that may prevent you from finding your Irish ancestors.

TIP OF THE WEEK – GENEALOGY GOPHERS
Researching family histories online is an activity that has begun to come of age. Thousands of family history books and magazines can be searched directly from multiple websites. But searching through these websites and combing through the jumble of information they return can be a frustrating, costly, and fruitless process.
The newly launched family history website, GenGophers.com, solves these problems by providing precise and free access to the industry’s most effective online search tools and a growing library of more than 40,000 downloadable family and personal histories, local histories, and genealogy newsletters.
GenGophers.com is the only website that – completely for free – returns genealogy book results only. Results include the publication name and a snippet from the page showing the highlighted search terms. Relevant pages and books can be downloaded for free from the GenGophers.com website.
Check them out at https://www.gengophers.com/#/
BONUS TIP OF THE WEEK: WHAT IS A WEBINAR, ANYWAY?
In short, a webinar is a web-based seminar, that one can “attend” from home.
Here is a link to an on-line explanation of how webinars work: http://blog.geneawebinars.com/p/how-it-works.html

TIP OF THE WEEK – MyHERITAGE puts exclusive Scandinavian records online:

Danish records
MyHeritage has entered into an agreement with the National Archives of Denmark to digitize and index over 120 million records, including all available Danish census records from 1787-1930 and Parish records from 1646 to 1915. The entire 1930 Danish census (3.5 million records) is available online now. The remaining censuses and Parish records will be released during 2015 and 2016.

Swedish Household Examination Rolls, 1880-1920:
The household examination rolls are the primary register of the Swedish church, listing the residents of each parish, their families, and important life events such as births, marriages and deaths. The collection includes 54 million records with 5 million color images of which 22 million records are already available online. The remaining records are scheduled to go online before the end of June 2015.

Seattle Genealogical Society Updates

SGS Board Meeting minutes now available on-line

Historically, the minutes of SGS Board meetings have been posted on the Information Board at the SGS Library soon after they have been approved, so that any interested member may view them and see what the Board has been working on.
At their January 2015 meeting, the SGS Board of Directors voted to ALSO make the approved minutes of Board meetings available online in the Members section of the Society’s web site, where they may be viewed by any current member, from wherever they have Internet access.
The minutes from our December 2, 2014 meeting were approved at the Board meeting of January 27, 2015, and are now available online.  To view them, go to the SGS web site at http://seattlegenealogicalsociety.org/ and click on LOGIN and follow the instructions.
If you cannot remember your Username or Password, send an email toSGSSecretary@gmail.com, including your name and zip code; we’ll check your membership status (we need to do that because this eNewsletter goes to previous members as well as active members) and send you instructions on how to proceed.

CALLING ALL WRITERS!
The first Seattle Genealogical Society Writing content is here! Do you love to write the stories of your families but are not interested in writing your story within the structure of a formal research paper? Then, this is for you. For the next SGS Bulletin, SGS is soliciting your family stories– sometimes called “creative non-fiction.” These stories are non-fiction stories but contain narrative which might have happened. The contest is open to SGS members and monetary prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be awarded. For more information go to the SGS website under Publications for Contest Guidelines and entry form. Entries are due 1 April 2015.

HELP WANTED – CURRENT SGS NEEDS & OPENINGS

IT TAKES A SOCIETY TO PUT ON A SEMINAR
Each year, SGS puts on two seminars, bringing in nationally known speakers.  These seminars are always well received, and draw big crowds.  The seminars are vital to SGS because membership dues cover less than one half of the society’s operating budget each year. Revenue from the seminars is another of our main revenue sources, and this revenue is critical to our society’s operation. Therefore it is important that we ensure the seminars’ success.

This year, the Spring seminar will be on Saturday May 9, and we need more help in all the areas that make or break a seminar: effective publicity; assistance with set-up and parking on the morning of the event; an efficient registration & sign-in desk; arranging and serving the seminar lunch; and more.
Below are several openings we need to fill.  If you can help with these, or wish to help in any way, please email Betty Ravenholt, ravenholt@aol.com

NEEDED: We need 3 more volunteers to help with registration for the SGS Spring Seminar on the morning of Saturday, May 9, 2015, 8:30-10:30 a.m. at Greenwood Senior Center.

NEEDED: Two volunteers willing to give SGS approximately one hour to put out snacks/water bottles and group prepared/delivered lunch boxes at SGS spring seminar on 9 May. Work begins at 8:30. Seminar at Greenwood Senior Center. Email Betty Ravenholt, ravenholt@aol.com

NEEDED: Three volunteers willing to give SGS approximately one hour to hand out lunch boxes and replenish snack trays/water bottles at SGS spring seminar on 9 May. Work will take about one hour and begins about 12:00. Seminar at Greenwood Senior Center. Email Betty Ravenholt, ravenholt@aol.com

NEEDED: Several volunteers to help fold the seminar brochures and apply printed mailing labels on them (about 2-3 hours at SGS, sometime in the last week of February).  Email Betty Ravenholt, ravenholt@aol.com

IN ADDITION, SGS needs to select the chairperson for the two seminars in 2016 NOW, to begin the process of identifying and inviting the speakers.
WANTED: Seminars Chairperson for 2016. Volunteer now, and learn the job from the 2015 Seminar Chairperson, while getting a jump on planning the Spring and Fall SGS Seminars for 2016. Applicants please contact Jean Roth, jeanaroth@juno.com

WANTED:  Reviving the Publicity Committee to publicize events and the society in general. About  four  hours per month for:  posting SGS event information on area genealogical societies’ web site calendars, posting event information to local newspapers’ calendars, working with Seminar and Education committees to meet publicity needs. Monthly meeting but much committee work can be done from home. Contact SGSVicePresident@gmail.com

WANTED:  Volunteers willing to give 3-4 hours a month for answering research queries that come to SGS (generally out-of-state requests).  Work includes:  looking for obituaries in Seattle Times (online or at Seattle Public Library),  looking for listings in the Seattle City Directory (at SGS office) and copying a page from a book in the SGS Library (requester will identify book and page). ContactSGSVicePresident@gmail.com

TREASURER’S REQUEST
Calling all SGS volunteers who work with PayPal, eBay, GiveBig, JustGive or any other online service related to revenue for SGS. I do not have a list of names and/or responsibilities. Would anyone who is currently assigned such responsibilities, please send me an email as soon as possible at sgstreasurer@gmail.com indicating which service and your duties so that I can set up a meeting. I need your expertise and advice about what procedures are being used, what is working, and what might need to be reviewed.
THANK YOU,
Fran Lewis, Treasurer
