Northeast Washington Genealogical Society Fall Seminar

Saturday, September 16th the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society will be holding their 29th annual Fall Seminar at the “Ambulance Shack” located at the North Roundabout in Colville.
The featured presenter will be William Dollarhide; renowned genealogy lecturer and author. He has been in pursuit of his family origins since 1971 and involved professionally with genealogy since 1980. He has written over 120 published magazine articles relating to genealogical research; has developed several software systems for genealogy; and he is the author of over 30 books, including Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses, 1790-1920, one of the best-selling genealogy books of all time

Northeast Washington Genealogical Society meeting February 8, 2017.

The next Northeast Washington Genealogical Society meetings are on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. The morning Computer Interest Group (CIG) will meet in the basement meeting room of the LDS Church on Juniper Street in Colville at 10:30 AM. Entry is located at the back of the building. The building is located one block east of the South Main Restaurant on Hwy 395.

Sue Richart, long-time NeWGS member and frequent presenter will share information she has gleaned from “The WPA Historical Records Survey: A Guide to the Unpublished Inventories, Indexes, and Transcripts” which began in 1936.  During its existence, the HRS produced thirty-four publications for Washington State. Sue will explain the impact the Historical Records Survey had on where material ended up and why it may have genealogical significance for researchers in all states.

We will take a lunch break at noon and then meet again in the LDS Lower Meeting Room at 1:30 p.m.

For our afternoon session Don McConnell, a NeWGS favorite Civil War historian will come and speak on a unique project he has been working on. Specifically he will share about resources that have recently become available on-line regarding deserters from the US Army to Confederate forces in Texas.

Welcome to 2017! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. It was certainly a white one here!

This Wednesday (the 11th) is our first meeting of the year. The computer group will meet at 10:30 a.m. in the meeting room down the hall from the Family History Center at the LDS church on Juniper. Karen Struve will be sharing information about how to use Pinterest to assist you in your genealogy research. Be sure to download her handout that you will find in the Members section of our website, under Secure Download, Computer Meeting Handouts.

After a break for lunch, we will return to the LDS church for our afternoon meeting at 1:30 p.m. After a short business meeting, the afternoon meeting will be a sharing session that we invite all of you to take part in. Come and share your latest finds. Perhaps it will be a new ancestor or one that has eluded you for a long time, or maybe it is a new resource that you found particularly helpful. Whatever success you have had, we want to hear about it!

The next Northeast Washington Genealogical Society meetings are on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. The morning Computer Interest Group (CIG) will meet in the basement meeting room of the LDS Church on Juniper Street in Colville at 10:30 AM. Entry is located at the back of the building. For all you lovers of Pinterest this month’s CIG presentation is for you. Even if you aren’t a Pinterest lover you just might want to join us and see what all the excitement is about and how it relates to your genealogy research. Karen Struve, Vice-President of NeWGS will be sharing some useful tips to help you expand and share your genealogy through Pinterest.

We will take a lunch break at noon and then meet again in the LDS Lower Meeting Room at 1:30 p.m.

For our afternoon session our members and guests are encouraged to share special discoveries and successes they experienced recently.  This will be an informal “round-table” format.

Perhaps you have something to share that would help another researcher break through their “brick wall”. This can be anything from a book you recommend to your experience obtaining hard to find documentation.  Perhaps you have recently discovered a long sought burial location for your ancestor. The more we share the more we learn.

Claire Bardwell Awarded 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Honor

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized almost 500 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2016 award recipients and learn why they received the 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing Claire Bardwell of Colville, Washington, who was nominated by the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society (NeWGS). She was recognized for her significant contributions to the society beginning in 1986 with her involvement in indexing birth, marriage and death records of Stevens and Ferry counties.

Since 1986, Mrs. Bardwell has helped with the annual clean-up of the Evergreen Cemetery, been involved in courthouse research through the years, taught classes on using land records, participated in numerous indexing projects. She has also served on the board of directors of NeWGS in several different capacities.

Mrs. Bardwell’s most recent contributions have been in the extraction and indexing of local courthouse records adding more than 4,000 entries to NeWGS’s databases.

Mrs. Bardwell is a respected and valuable, long-time member of the NeWGS, and her contributions prove that she richly deserved being a recipient of a 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

The next Northeast Washington Genealogical Society meetings are on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. The morning Computer Interest Group (CIG) will meet in the basement meeting room of the LDS Church on Juniper Street in Colville at 10:30 AM. Entry is located at the back of the building. The building is located one block east of the South Main Restaurant on Hwy 395.

Vice-President, Karen Struve will take a new approach for beginning on-line genealogy research. This month the focus will be on starting from scratch.  She will share her methodology for creating a tribute to a young man whose life was tragically cut short.

We will take a lunch break at noon and then meet again in the LDS Lower Meeting Room at 1:30 p.m.

It’s time to re-think those brick walls that keep all of us from making progress on our genealogy research. Perhaps the answer is right there in your old research that you set aside so long ago.

Susan Dechant, President of NeWGS will lead the discussion about those walls as well as offer up some tips and tricks to help us break them down or, maybe, just move on and around the walls.

September is here and our next meeting is this Wednesday, the 14th. The NeWGS Computer Interest Group will meet at 10:30 a.m. in the meeting room down the hall from the Family History Center at the LDS church on Juniper. I will demonstrate using RootsMagc, another popular genealogy program. You can download a handout for this class (RootsMagic 2016) by going to our website and logging in as a Member, selecting Secure Downloads, then Computer Meeting Handouts and scrolling down towards the bottom of the list. It should be near the bottom with “New” flagging it.
After a break for lunch, we will return to the LDS church for our afternoon meeting at 1:30 p.m. After a short business meeting (including elections of officers), Norm Yost will walk us a through a Genealogy Do-Over based on a new book by Thomas MacEntee. There is also a handout for this class located under General Meeting Handouts and it too should appear near the bottom of that list.
And don’t forget our upcoming Fall Workshop this next Saturday, the 17th. If you haven’t registered already you can still do so. We are also celebrating our 35th anniversary. That’s a BIG DEAl and there will be cake! See more details under Events.

The morning Computer Interest Group (CIG) will meet in the basement meeting room of the LDS Church on Juniper Street in Colville at 10:30 AM. Entry is located at the back of the building. The building is located one block east of the South Main Restaurant on Hwy 395.

For August and September we will focus on organizing your genealogy research. This month’s meeting will focus on Family Tree Maker. Karen Struve will demonstrate how to get started in Family Tree Maker software. And by the way, Family Tree Maker will continue to provide the ability to synchronize with trees on Ancestry.com.

In September Susan Dechant will demonstrate another great genealogy program, RootsMagic.

We will take a lunch break at noon and then meet again in the LDS Lower Meeting Room  at 1:30 p.m.

Sue Richart, a long-time NeWGS member and one of our favorite presenters will be sharing information she has gleaned while researching the Colville National Forest Records. She will share how this information can be valuable as you research your ancestors in this area as well as other areas nationally who have these types of records. It gives us a better understanding of how our ancestor’s lives were impacted by the area they lived in.
