Heritage Quest Research Library Fire Update

What a winter this has been!
As many of you know on October 28th, 2022, we experienced an arson fire just behind our building. Thank goodness the fire department responded quickly and were able to get the fire knocked down. The building next door was not so lucky. If you happen to drive down Main Street in Sumner, you will see a big hole where the Stuck Junction Restaurant and Lounge used to be. We made it through with only smoke damage and have had the books cleaned and stored. The information we are receiving from the building owner indicates that it will be some time before we can get back into the building. They are working with the city of Sumner to make progress to re-open but are realistically looking to the end of the year. What does all this mean for Heritage Quest Research Library?
We are working hard to move forward. The Management Team (daily processes) and the Board of Trustees have met and discussed several scenarios and options for that forward motion. We have viewed several different sites from Auburn to Orting to Puyallup and are finding available locations to be very few. However, the library crew and the teams are still engaged in the service we provide. Our classes are still being scheduled and attended by many of you. Our members have access to My Heritage and Ancestry from home. But we still need you.
Your continued support of HQRL by logging into your account and accessing Ancestry and My Heritage helps us tremendously. Signing up for a class or two and taking the opportunity to give us feedback will help us in our quest to continue to be a premier genealogy resource. If you are not a member, now would be a great time to do so.

Working Your Way to IRELAND Using American Records First

This presentation will focus on what an American researcher has to do to be successful. It is not as easy as it sounds, especially when you are working with records that are different then what you are used to here. What lies beyond ancestry charts and family group sheets is more important than you think. They are the skeleton and you need to put meat on the bones before you hop the flight to Dublin, Shannon, Cork, or Belfast.

Navigating the ‘Net
The internet is a goldmine of genealogical information. Sometimes, it can be daunting to decide where to begin. In this presentation, we will have brief overviews of the largest and most frequently used sites. We’ll talk about some of the differences among them and their overall usefulness. We will also visit some sites that may not be at the top of a researcher’s list. There is value in all of them, and you just may find a new vein to mine! Joleen Aitchison has been involved in genealogical endeavors since she was a child and continues the search. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Bainbridge Island Genealogical Society, and the consulting genealogist for Traditions of the Ancestors (TOTA). Joleen has presented at various events throughout the United States. She teaches family history locally in Kitsap, Jefferson, and Clallam counties, as well as making presentations for area genealogical societies. She has served as a Family History Center Director and organized and presented at the Kitsap County Genealogy Expo held in Silverdale, Washington, for five years. Caron Primas Brennan loves history, biography, puzzles and a good mystery, which makes her perfectly suited to genealogy research. A 6th grade school project got her interested in researching her own family tree. Her special areas of genealogical interest are Colonial America, Prussian and Norwegian research along her family lines as well as DNA projects.
Caron belongs to several local and regional genealogy groups as well as being a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild and a Professional Member of the Association of Professional Genealogists. She has been teaching at the Newberry Library in Chicago and speaking at local libraries and genealogical societies for over ten years with consistently excellent feedback.

Heritage Quest Research Library Fire Update

ATTENTION!
Good News!
We’re Still Here! We are happy to announce that while the library has received damage from the fire and the entire contents are out for cleaning, we are still here. Many of you have been following us through personal connections, phone calls, connections with some of the library volunteers or the latest newsletter. We wanted everyone to know that we are still a viable genealogical resource and that we have not given up.

The library space at 1007 Main Street in Sumner Washington has been given over to the building owner from whom we rented the unit. They will be doing extensive repairs to the space due to the fire next door. Those repairs may take as long as a year.

What that means for us, is that we are now tasked with finding another space for our library and bookstore. You can help us in that endeavor by keeping an eye on what’s happening in your neighborhood. We will continue to keep you informed as we move forward in our search for a new home.

We will continue to offer ZOOM classes on a monthly basis. Our Beginning Genealogy “A” class will be held on January 5, 2023, and on January 19, 2023, Caron Prima-Brennan will speak on “Where Did I Put Great-Grampa? Organizing for Genealogists”.
