Mac McGarvin

GFO’s May STAR – Mac McGarvin

GFO’s jack-of-all trades has done it again.

Mac took it upon himself to build and install more than five hundred new shelves for our books.

The existing metals shelves were too short and didn’t provide adequate support for the size and number of books we store.

So he made wooden shelf inserts, custom-cut and assembled to fit over the existing shelves. This instantly gave us deeper shelves. Our books and the GFO are once again in better shape thanks to Mac’s vigilant care.

Thank you, Mac, for all you do for GFO!

This presentation provides a brief overview of Italian geography, major historical events that affected record keeping, and where to find the records. This will give you a foundation for searching Italian records. Facilitated by Keith Pyeatt.

Gen Talk – My Cuban Cousins 2 – 3pm

Finding and Following the Paths of My Cuban Cousins: “I was always told that I had cousins who had immigrated to Cuba, but no one could remember their names or even which branch of the family they were from. And Cuba is a difficult country to research. As more records have become available online, I was able to uncover enough clues to find and contact some of my Cuban cousins. In the summer of 2015, I traveled to Cuba to see what traces I could find of my family there.” Presentation by Janice Sellers.

SUNDAY, May 20th

Library Work Party 9am – Noon

There’s another work party at the GFO library today for those of you who can come. There’s lots to do and we’d love to have your help. Doors open at 9 and work usually wraps up around noon. Some people come for just an hour or so, while others work the full time. You are welcome to do either. Any time you can share is valuable. Hope to see you there.

Family Tree Maker Users’ Group 1 – 3pm

Join other users who want to work through the 2017 Companion Guide to Family TreeMaker. Bring your laptop with 2017 version of FTM installed and an empty USB thumb drive. We’ll organize future sessions and work through Chapter 3 in the guide. A practice tree will be used so as not to damage your personal tree. Facilitated by Joyce Grant-Worley. Interested or have questions? Email Joyce at FTM@gfo.org.

French Canada Group 3:30 – 5pm

Sharing stories of our history. Come and join this new group to learn more about French Canadian ancestry and Acadia. The group leader is Bob LaMarche.

WEDNESDAY, May 23

Open Late The GFO library remains open every Wednesday evening until 8pm.

Wednesday Nostalgia

Everybody, but everybody, knows the story of Humpty Dumpty and can quickly recite the rhyme: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall…… Humpty Dumpty  had a great fall….. all the kings horses and all the kings men couldn’t put Dumpty together again. Bet you’ve recited that to your grandkids more than once.

Look again: where does it say that Humpty Dumpty was an EGG???

Quoting from TIDBITS, the freebie thing found everywhere, “the rhyme dates back to 1797 but it wasn’t until Lewis Carroll’s 1872 book, Through the Looking Glass, that he was described as an egg.

“In the original nursery rhyme, the last lines read: “Fourscore men and fourscore more could not make Humpty Dumpty where he was before.”

Thank you, TIDBITS, for this most educational tidbit.

Heritage Quest Research Library Classes

Wednesday, May 23
Lorrie Ann’s Honor  (Classroom)
1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Heritage Quest Research Library
An overwhelming feeling floods 5-year-old Lorrie in 1958, that her beloved Dad is not her Dad. Though her Mom denies her feelings, they linger for a lifetime. Parents die, and she makes peace knowing it is out of her hands. In 2016 while attending a genealogy conference, she strikes up a conversation with one attendee whose knowledge of DNA testing, creates hope in at least learning nationalities. The stranger turns out to be a pivotal part of Lorrie’s search.
Come hear how one person makes her way through DNA analysis to finding the truth about her father, with the help of a “stranger.”
Presented by:  Lorrie Scott
Fee:  $15

Heritage Quest Research Library Autumn Quest

Autumn Quest 2018 date announced

Friday, October 5
Autumn Quest 2018 with Angie Bush, MS  (Seminar)
8:30 am to 4:00 pm
Emerald Queen Convention Center

Ancestry’s own Angie Bush, MS, Ancestry’s Senior ProGenealogist and NGS Region 1 Director, and the chair of its Genetic Genealogy committee. Her day job is as a Senior Genealogist with Ancestry ProGenealogists in Salt Lake City. Angie has been interested in her genealogy since she was very young. After college, she spent several years working in biotech while continuing to pursue her genealogy hobby. With the growing popularity and introduction of autosomal DNA testing in 2012, she decided to combine her two loves into one career. Although she spends a lot of time working on recent unknown parentage cases (adoptions, unknown fathers, donor conceived), her favorite type of research to do involves solving decades old “brick-walls” using a combination traditional records and genetic evidence. She is a popular speaker and presenter, and enjoys attending conferences where she can connect with others who share her passion for genealogy. Angie is a Utah native and lives with her husband and two descendants in Sandy, Utah.
