We would appreciate you sharing news about our seminar with your members and Facebook and Twitter followers. We hope your group is well and healthy in these perilous times.

Registration is open! Attached is the flyer and registration form for our upcoming seminar with Diahan Southard.
If you are feeling that your DNA data is not fully working for you, join us Saturday, October 24 for two sessions with Diahan Southard, a pioneer in the field. She will help you analyze and connect the data the companies give you with your family tree.
If you plan to pay by check, we suggest downloading and sending the registration form soon because of the Postal Service slowdowns. Payments using Paypal, Venmo and Square are all accepted. Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week Ethnicity Estimate

TIP OF THE WEEK –
ANCESTRY ETHNICITY ESTIMATE UPDATE
Did you get the word Ancestry.com DNA ethnicity estimates have been updated? Anyone who has taken an Ancestry.com DNA test can login to their account and see their new ethnicity estimate results.

Here is Ancestry’s explanation for this update and the changes you might see. They say, “Don’t worry, your DNA doesn’t change. What changes is what we know about DNA, the amount of data we have, and the ways we can analyze it. When that leads to new discoveries, we update your results. To calculate your estimate, we compare your DNA to a reference panel of DNA samples from around the world. As we get more samples in our panel, we can identify more world populations for you.”.

From “Discover Your DNA Story”, you can find “Learn More About This Update” for more details. And from there, for a limited time, you may view or print your previous ethnicity estimate using “View Previous Estimate”.

If you are ready to learn more about DNA and genetic genealogy, check the SGS Calendar of Events for meeting times for the DNA interest groups, “DNA Workshop” and “DNA Interest Group”. And don’t forget about the SGS 2020 Fall Seminar with Dr Blaine Bettinger, author of “The Genetic Genealogist” blog.

This presentation will help you with name and surname research, as well as genealogical methods and research tips on finding the women in your ancestry.

“Finding My Roots: Using the Entire Genealogy Toolbox”
Presented by Coral Grant, Genealogical Lecturer

Description: The secrets that Coral Grant’s grandparents thought were safe eventually became unraveled through the magic of DNA, archival research, and tenacity. The truth revealed an unknown ancestor and a truly rich Latvian heritage. Working back in time, this adventure begins in the Garment District of Toronto, Canada in the early 1930’s and ends deep in the Latvian countryside of the 18th century. The journey includes a life altering deportation from the Latvian countryside during World War I, a survivor’s struggle to return home, a deception to avoid military service, and a most reluctant immigration. Along the way, Coral encountered many genealogical roadblocks: name changes, protective descendants, and multiple individuals with the same name. Using her research to share her family story and Latvian Jewish history, Coral’s presentation highlights the use of all the tools available to the genealogist. Ultimately, the goal of our genealogical research is to honor our ancestors and to make sure we do not forget their stories. Coral’s presentation will leave you with the tools to break through your genealogical roadblocks and find your ancestors, for you to tell their stories.     ————————————————————————————————————————————
