This presentation introduces resources for tracing the women in your family, many of which are available online, including oral histories, federal and state census records, immigration records, vital records, church records, journals, newspapers, legal and court records, library archives, and manuscript collections. When you are researching the women in your ancestry, also consider looking at family items, including cards, letters, cookbook notes, and records. This presentation will help you with name and surname research, as well as genealogical methods and research tips on finding the women in your ancestry.  ABOUT OUR SPEAKERJanice M. Sellers a professional genealogist specializing in Black, Jewish, dual citizenship, forensic, and newspaper research. She is the editor of ZichronNote, the quarterly journal of the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society (SFBAJGS) and has previously edited four other genealogy publications. She is the publicity director, programming director, and a board member of SFBAJGS and a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, Council for the Advancement of Forensic Genealogy, Genealogical Speakers Guild, and Genealogical Forum of Oregon. Janice is also currently the acting president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Oregon. She has volunteered at Family History Centers since 2000 and gives dynamic presentations on many genealogical topics at the local, regional, state, and national/international levels, most recently this August at the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies’ annual conference. She has researched her own family history for more than 40 years. Before becoming a professional genealogist, Janice worked in publishing for many years as an editor, indexer, translator, and compositor. Four stories of survival” Presented by Arik Cohen, speaker from Seattle’s Holocaust Center of Humanity   Description: All four of Arik Cohen’s grandparents survived the Holocaust. When told by Holocaust experts that this was quite rare, he was motivated to research and discover their survival stories. For the last five years, as a legacy member of the Holocaust For Humanity’s Speakers Bureau, Arik has shared how his grandparents survived mass murders, ghetto liquidations, death camp internment, death marches and winter wilderness survival with students and community members across the Pacific Northwest. We’ll have some breakout rooms available so if enough people are interested in a particular topic, you can get your fill! ———————————————————————————————————————————— Monday evening, November 9, 2020, 7 p.m. “Finding My Roots: Using the Entire Genealogy Toolbox” Presented by Coral Grant, Genealogical Lecturer  Description: The secrets that Coral Grant’s grandparents thought were safe eventually became unraveled through the magic of DNA, archival research, and tenacity. The truth revealed an unknown ancestor and a truly rich Latvian heritage. Working back in time, this adventure begins in the Garment District of Toronto, Canada in the early 1930’s and ends deep in the Latvian countryside of the 18th century. The journey includes a life altering deportation from the Latvian countryside during World War I, a survivor’s struggle to return home, a deception to avoid military service, and a most reluctant immigration. Along the way, Coral encountered many genealogical roadblocks: name changes, protective descendants, and multiple individuals with the same name. Using her research to share her family story and Latvian Jewish history, Coral’s presentation highlights the use of all the tools available to the genealogist. Ultimately, the goal of our genealogical research is to honor our ancestors and to make sure we do not forget their stories.
