Seattle Genealogical Society News

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

If one could see a bright side to this trying year 2020, it would have to be that there are so many more online learning opportunities today. Look at the SGS Calendar of Events. Look at the items under Save the Dates – items from Auburn, Washington to Washington, DC to Oklahoma. Because of technology, no matter where you live, you can “attend” these events, near or far.

Our SGS Second Saturday presentations are very popular. You are all invited to the next one, October 10, at 1:00 pm PDT, when Lori Lee Sauber will present “Did My Ancestors Really Pay for the Mayflower Voyage”. This is the conclusion to Lori’s story, “Mayflower and Me”, from the July 31st eNews! Click below to reread that story:

If Scandinavian genealogy is your thing, we have a group for that. Their next meeting is Sunday, October 11, at 1:00 pm PDT. There will be presentations on Moveable Feast Days, as well as Swedish Estate Inventories.

Don’t forget about the SGS 2020 Fall Seminar (Virtual) with Blaine Bettinger, Saturday, October 17, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm PDT. Register today. Now, more than every, your support is important and appreciated.

GFO’s Grand Idea Needs Your Input

GFO’s Grand Idea Needs Your Input
Hello GFO Supporter, As the Genealogical Forum of Oregon approaches its 75th anniversary in 2021, the Board has a really grand idea. In fact, this is a huge undertaking unlike anything we’ve ever done. It’s time that you are included in the discussion. We think the Genealogical Forum of Oregon should buy its own building. A permanent home would free the GFO of rent increases from a landlord. It would give us stability, a known space, and control of our future. Acting now could guarantee our future 25 years from now. Our current lease allows us to leave only in the summer of 2021, or 2026, or 2031. Next year is too soon to make this happen. But by 2026, our monthly rent will reach about the same level as a mortgage payment. That’s when this makes more financial sense. Why not have all that monthly “rent” go into our very own building? Yes, we realize the timing is not ideal. The pandemic is rocking our economy. We would need to raise $400,000 to $500,000 for a down payment on a mortgage and additional funds to cover required renovations of a new space by early to mid-2025, then find a building, remodel it, and move by late spring 2026. To do this will be a monumental task. We are not suggesting buying a building free and clear. That would require $1.5 to $2 million. (Please share this idea with any philanthropists in your life!) Keep in mind that we would still need to raise money in our Annual Appeal to continue paying for year-to-year operations. A capital campaign would have to be in addition to regular fundraising. That’s a very big request. We’re a small organization. And frankly, we’re not professional fundraisers. We need help. As a GFO member, we’d like your feedback. Should we aim this high? Can you help us do it? Please enter the link below to take a quick survey, or fill out the paper version enclosed and mail it back.

Olympia Genealogical Society October Meeting

October is the month of colder weather, hot cider and Halloween! In preparation for the holiday, we have asked OGS member Jerri McCoy to talk to us about “The Witches of Salem.” We of the twenty-first century are aware that witches do not fly across the sky on brooms, but in 1692 charity and mercy – and plain good sense – were all cast aside in persecution of suspected witches in colonial Massachusetts. The witch hunt would swell and burn through Salem Village and neighboring towns. How were witches identified? What happened to them?  And who were those who were executed that terrible year?  Come learn a little bit about them and their meddling neighbors at our virtual meeting, Thursday, October 8 at 7 p.m.  https://OlyGenSoc.org

Heritage Quest Research Library Challenge Match

Your Donation will be Matched!

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic we have tried to stay STRONG, but that hasn’t been easy.  We closed the library on Friday, March 13, 2020 right in the middle of the NOURISH OUR ROOTS campaign to replenish our reserves.  We are eternally grateful that you stepped up and helped us in that endeavor.  While we were able to move forward because of your generosity, we find ourselves again behind the 8-ball due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

How can you HELP? What does all this mean?

We have been given a challenge by one of our valued members!

From now until the end of the year, for every $1 pledged to HQRL they will match your donation.  If you give $5, they will give $5.  If you give $100, they will give $100.  Essentially doubling your gift.

We have added a DONATION button to the HQRL webpage at: www.hqrl.com  for your convenience.

We want to be here for you.  We want to share our knowledge and expertise with you.  We want HQRL to be a premier place to research, learn and share genealogy, but we cannot do it alone. We know that COVID-19 has affected each of us in a variety of ways.  We hope for a healthier future and the ability to gather and share our stories.
